Question:
Assalaamu alaikum.
Is it ok to do 5 takbirs in janazah once in while seeing that there is a hadith on sahih muslim on it?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Method of salaatul janaazah according to the Hanafi Madhab.
The Mayyit (deceased) will be placed in front of the Mussalis. The Imam will stand in line with the head of a male Mayyit and in line with the waist of a female Mayyit. The Saffs should be an odd number.
There are two Faraa’idh in Janaazah Salaah:
1. The four Takbeers.
2. To stand and perform the Janaazah Salaah. A person who cannot stand will be excused from standing; he will be permitted to sit.
The three Sunan of Janaazah Salaah:
- To praise Allah Ta’aala.
- Durood (Salawaat) on Rasulullah Sallallaahu Alayhi wa Sallam.
- Du’aa for the Mayyit.
The Niyyah can be made in the following words:
I am performing Janaazah Salaah unto Allah Ta’aala and Du’aa for the Mayyit.
Say the first Takbeer lifting the hands to the ears and folding them below th Recite the Thana for Janazah:
Say the second Takbeer without lifting the hands and recite Durood Ebrahim.
Say the third Takbeer without lifting the hands and recite the Du’aa.
The following dua was narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him):
“Allahumma ighfir lihayyina wa mayyitina wa shahidina wa ghaibina wa saghirina wa kabirina wa dhakarina wa unthana. Allaahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa ahyihi ‘ala’l-Islam wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa tawaffahu ‘ala’l-iman.
After the Du’aa say the fourth Takbeer without lifting the hands. It is not necessary to recite anything after the fourth Takbeer. Salaam will be made after the fourth Takbeer. Complete the Salaah with Salaam to the right and left.
One should stick to this method of Janazah with 4 Takbeers. If 5 Takbeers are done, the Janazah will also be valid.
