Query from this football competition business. Is it permissible to have some of the fees used to register the teams (500 per team) to be used as prize money for the top three teams.
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
It would not be permissible to use the entrance fees paid for registering in the competition by each team, for the prizes to the winning teams, as this will constitute gambling.
It will be permissible if a third party, who is not one of the participants pays separately for the prizes, without using the entry fees.
