Praying Salaah sitting due to pain.

fatwa-tt January 2, 2022

Question:

Assalamu alaikum warahamathullahi wabarakathuhu

Because of Knee pain and obesity, my mother used to sit on chair and pray. Is it permissible in Islam that sitting and praying just for knee pain? But the pain is severe. Only if she sits, she can satisfactorily pray. What to do now? Moreover, while sitting how to do sujood? Is it advisable to do sujood on another chair with pillow keeping infront or we have to just do in our hands?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In such circumstances where the pain is severe, it will be permissible to perform Salaah in the sitting posture or on a chair.[1]

The Fuqahaa (Jurists) have mentioned that if someone is unable to perform sujood (prostration) during Salaah, then the following rulings apply:

-Qiyaam (standing posture) is not obligatory on the person. Therefore one may sit from the beginning of Salaah.

-The person will perform the ruku’ (bowing down) and sajda (prostration) by gesture (i.e. by bending of the head) in such a way that one lowers the head more for sajda than the lowering for ruku’.[2]

Sujood should be done by bending forward with the hands on the lap. The head should not be rested on something raised, e.g. a pillow or desk.[3]

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
