Is it permissible to perform Salah in a dark room without any dislike?

fatwa-tt November 23, 2017

Question

Is it permissible to perform Salah in a dark room without any dislike?

Answer

Yes, it is permissible to perform Salah in a dark room without any Karahah (dislike) if it aids a person in his concentration and devotion. This is also established from the authentic traditions of the Prophet ﷺ. Aisha (r.a) narrates the following;

Aishah (r.a.) said: I missed the Prophet ﷺ one night, so I started searching for him using my hand. My hand touched his feet and they were held upright, and he was prostrating and saying: ‘I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your anger, in Your forgiveness from Your punishment, and I seek refuge in You from You. I cannot praise You enough, You are as You have praised yourself.’

If however, the darkness of the room affects one’s concentration and devotion in that it instills fright or Wasawis then a light should be lit.
