Can Janazah be performed on a cremated body?

fatwa-tt January 10, 2023

Question:

If the body of a Muslim was cremated (perhaps because of Hindu family members), can Janazah Salaah be performed with ashes if they are able to be retrieved?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

In such a case where unfortunately the body was cremated or badly decomposed, Janazah Salaah will not be performed. The remains will be placed in a cloth and buried.

Although Janazah will not be performed, Dua can be made, asking Allah Ta’ala to have mercy upon the deceased and forgive his sins. Muslims living in such a situation where their next of kin or children are non- Muslims, must leave behind a recognised bequest for an Islamic Janazah and burial.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
