Advice on father having interest bearing account.

fatwa-tt August 4, 2016

Question:

Respected sir

I am facing a very serious problem. Actually my father was having a sum of money and initially he told to my family that he has made that amount fix in a bank on interest, I told my father that from the fix amount you are receiving Riba which is HARAAM in Islam so you should stop doing so. Then my father started saying that now he is having a current bank account. My family is in a big doubt about his income, whether his is getting interest on a fixed amount or he is having lawful income, as professionally my father is doing nothing. Now we do not use or eat anything from his money. I am a teacher and having good earning to support my family but still father has role in daily life purchases. Kindly guide me.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Your concern for your father’s halal income is a sign of your taqwa and Allah consciousness.

Presently, your father has a current account and it does not accrue interest. Therefore, this should not be of any further concern for you. The interest he accrued in the past should be given away in sadaqa to the poor and needy.1

Your father’s major income is halal. If he purchases items for the house it will be regarded as purchased from halal. It is permissible for the family to use or consume the items purchased by the father.2

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
