Paying bribery to avoid certain difficulties.

fatwa-tt September 2, 2025

Message:
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In the business of imports a growing trend is taking place, in where in certain situations shipments may be classified as “red flag” and require custom officers to observe the offloading of the stock. In some situations, custom officers often request bribery wether monetary or in terms of item. In such situations would be permissible to partake in this act as there is no other options.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Bribery, paying or receiving is prohibited in Islaam.

Abdullah Ibn ‘Amr narrates that the Prophet, Sallallahu Alayhi Wa sallam, cursed the one who gives bribes and the one who accepts bribes.” (Abu Dawood).

In the situation in reference, shipments that are flagged and may require custom officers to observe the offloading of the stock, while it may not be the ideal situation and is more time consuming, it would not justify the payment of bribes to the custom officers.

While in certain dire situations one may be allowed to pay such monies to ward off harm, like when in fear for one’s well-being or wealth from the one who is being paid, this situation does not allow such. However, one may maintain a good relationship with such officers and treat them in a cordial manner.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best.
