Would it be mandatory for to take the vaccine in order to perform Hajj?

fatwa-tt May 18, 2022

Question:

If a baligh male has the nisab to go for hajj for the first time but has not taken the vaccine due to personal/medical reasons and therefore cannot travel. Then would it be mandatory for him to take the vaccine in order to perform Hajj?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

On the onset, we clarify that from a Shari’ah and permissibility aspect, relating to the constituents of the vaccine in the light of the available data and statements from many of our senior and reliable Ulamaa, we have concluded the COVID-19 vaccines available locally is permissible for Muslims.

Taking medication as a cure or a preventative means is not contrary to Tawakkul. It is in fact part of Taqdeer (Allah’s decree) to take medication. It is mentioned in a Hadith:

Abu Khuzamah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) was asked: Do you think that the treatments we use, the Ruqyah we recite, and what we seek to protect ourselves with will deter us from Allah’s Decree?’ He replied: They (medication and means of protection) are all from Allah’s Decree. (Sunan Ibn Majah-3437)

If Hajj becomes obligatory upon a person, by having the health and wealth, it should be performed soon as possible. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: He who intends to perform hajj should hasten to do so (Abu Dawood 1732)

As for the requirement of the Covid vaccine for Hajj, hopefully this is a temporary requirement and we make Dua, just as many of the travel restrictions are decreasing, this will also be removed.

Therefore, it is permissible for the individual to wait until the requirement is removed[1] InshaAllah, and he will not be compelled to take the vaccine. However, meanwhile one should make Wasiyah (bequest) for Hajj al Badal on his behalf in the event he happens to pass away before he can actually undertake the Hajj.[2]

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
