Ruling on wadi.

fatwa-tt November 4, 2014

Question:

Assalamo Alikum,

I have this problem that has occured two times so far on different days. When I use toilet and as I start peeing (sitting) , I have noticed that very thick fluid came out and it really looks like semen (mani) . But it just came out on it own and I was not masterbating or anything. I was just trying to pee and semen came out. So do I still have to take bath (ghusal) after it happens like that? (Also, can you not publish this question on site for everyone to see).

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

There are three types of fluids that emit from the private parts besides urine.

  1. Mani-Sperm: A white thick fluid which emits at the time of ejaculation.
  2. Mazi-Pre-coital fluid: A clear thin fluid which emits due to sexual arousement.
  3. Wadi-Liquid that precedes urine.
Wadi is thick, murky, white liquid that resembles mani (semen) in thickness but not in murkiness. It has no smell and comes out after urination. Sometimes, it comes out before urination. Usually, not much more than a few drops of wadi comes out.

The fluid you experienced was wadi, the emission of wadi only necessitates Wudhu, not Ghusl[1].
