Is it permissible to do keratin treatment on one’s hair?

fatwa-tt May 28, 2024

Question:

السلام عليكم ورحمه الله وبركاته

Is it permissible to do keratin treatment on one’s hair?

 جزاك الله خيرا

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Keratin treatments are the umbrella term used to describe a hair-smoothing treatment that uses keratin. A keratin treatment is a semi-permanent chemical smoothing treatment which can smooth hair and add shine. It works by forming a coating over the hair to fill the gaps left behind by depleted keratin, smoothing each strand and creating a coat around hair.

Keratin treatment would be permissible as long as it does not contain any impermissible ingredients.  Regarding the validity of Ghusl and Wuhu, it is our understanding that the usual keratin hair treatment does not prevent water from reaching the hair or the scalp in a manner that would hinder one’s Ghusl or Wudhu[1].

However, we advise that one should exercise caution and seek alternative permissible hair treatment methods due to differences of opinions on the issue.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best.
