Is it permissible to attend a function without my spouse?

fatwa-tt December 13, 2014

Question:

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh

Is it permissible to attend a function without your spouse?

A colleague @ work has invited some of us to his walliamah without our spouse/children…

Shukran

Firoza

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Sister in Islam,

If the function is such that all rules of Shari’ah are adhered to, and there are no intermingling of sexes, then it will be permissible for a woman to attend without her spouse, on condition that the husband gave permission.1

We observe you are invited by a male colleague. It must also be noted that all laws of proper Hijab must be adhered to during work. Any violation of the laws of Hijab even with the consent of the husband is not permissible, including working in an environment of intermixing of genders.

Allah Ta’ala says in the Quran:

And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts) and not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent (like both eyes for necessity to see, or hands.), and to draw their veils all over Juyûbihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms) and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, or their fathers…(Surah An-Noor 31)

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
