Is a man allowed to use a pen which has some gold parts or decorations?

Question:

Assalamu Alaikum,

I know that a man is forbidden to use gold artifacts including jewelery, watches, or utensils.

Is a man allowed to use a pen which has some gold parts or decorations?

Here there can be two cases (not mutually exclusive),

  1. The nib is made of gold or is gold plated.
  2. The pen has some decorations (trims around body) made from gold or is gold plated.

Will a man be allowed to use the above pen?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

1) If the nib is only gold plated, then it is permissible for men to use such a pen. Similarly if the nib is made from less than 50% gold, then it will be permissible to use such a pen. If it contains more than 50% gold then it would not be permissible[1].

2) The same rulings would apply for the pen. It would be permissible to use if it is gold plated or contains less that 50% gold.

الدر المختار وحاشية ابن عابدين (رد المحتار) (6/ 342)
(قَوْلُهُ وَهَذَا فِيمَا يَرْجِعُ لِلْبَدَنِ) يَعْنِي أَنَّ تَحْرِيمَ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ فِيمَا يَرْجِعُ اسْتِعْمَالُهُ إلَى الْبَدَنِ: أَيْ فِيمَا يُسْتَعْمَلُ بِهِ لُبْسًا أَوْ أَكْلًا أَوْ كِتَابَةً، وَيُحْتَمَلُ أَنَّ الْمُرَادَ فِيمَا يَرْجِعُ نَفْعُهُ إلَى الْبَدَنِ، لَكِنْ لَا يَشْمَلُ اسْتِعْمَالَ الْقَلَمِ وَالدَّوَاةِ، وَالْأَحْسَنُ مَا فِي الْقُهُسْتَانِيِّ حَيْثُ قَالَ: وَفِي الِاسْتِعْمَالِ إشْعَارٌ بِأَنَّهُ لَا بَأْسَ بِاِتِّخَاذِ الْأَوَانِي مِنْهُمَا لِلتَّجَمُّلِ (قَوْلُهُ تَجَمُّلًا) أَيْ مِنْ غَيْرِ اسْتِعْمَالٍ أَصْلًا (قَوْلُهُ بَلْ فَعَلَهُ السَّلَفُ) هَذَا لَمْ يَذْكُرْهُ فِي الْخُلَاصَةِ بَلْ فِي التَّتَارْخَانِيَّة عَنْ الْمُحِيطِ (قَوْله حَتَّى أَبَاحَ إلَخْ) لِمَا كَانَ كَلَامُهُ الْآنَ فِي الِاتِّخَاذِ بِدُونِ اسْتِعْمَالٍ وَذَكَرَ اتِّخَاذَ الدِّيبَاجِ أَرَادَ أَنْ يَدْفَعَ مَا قَدْ يُتَوَهَّمُ أَنَّهُ لَا يَحِلّ تَوَسُّدُهُ وَالنَّوْمُ عَلَيْهِ.

وفي التَّهْذِيبِ لَا يَجُوزُ تَحْلِيَةُ سِكِّينِ الْقَلَمِ وَالْمَهْنَةِ وَالْمِقْرَاضِ وَالْمِقْلَمَةِ وَالدَّوَاةِ وَالْمِرْآةِ بِالذَّهَبِ وَهَلْ يَجُوزُ بِالْفِضَّةِ فيه وَجْهَانِ وَتَحْلِيَةُ السِّكِّينِ الذي هو لِلْحَرْبِ مُبَاحٌ وَتُكْرَهُ الْفِضَّةُ في الْمَكَاتِبِ في رِوَايَةِ أبي يُوسُفَ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى خِلَافًا لَهُمَا كَذَا في التُّمُرْتَاشِيِّ
