Importance of Istibraa for males after urinating.

fatwa-tt November 8, 2021

Question:

Assalamualaikum
Q: Is istibra too difficult?
Because in a day a person goes average 6-8 times for answering nature’s call, and every time performing istibra is time consuming.
Many times it takes more time and causes frustration (that I am spending more time on istibra than salah or any other activity)
Please councel me and explain to me ,

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

The aspect of Istinjaa (cleansing after relieving oneself) is indeed a very important issue. A person should exercise extreme precaution in matters related to this. It is stated in a Hadith;

The Prophet (Sallallahu Alahi Wa Sallam) once passed by two graves and said, “These two persons are being tortured not for a major sin (to avoid). One of them never saved himself from being soiled with his urine, while the other used to engage in gossiping (Bukhari, Hadith 215)

Istinjaa (to cleanse) the private parts is Sunnah Muakkadah. A person can
suffice on wiping with tissue paper as long as the impurities does not spread beyond the private parts.[1] In that case it, if it spreads it would be compulsory to use water[2].

After relieving yourself, you should conduct “Istibraa.” Istibraa is after a person urinates, he must ensure that the urine is comes out completely from the urinal track before doing Istinja.

If Istibraa was not performed, there is a tendency of it coming out afterwards, causing the clothing to become soiled (impure). If after performing wudhu, a drop of urine trickles down the urinary track and exits the private part, the wudhu will be nullified.

One should ensure all the urine drops are removed, for example, place one’s fingers on the area just below the scrotum and press that area while moving one’s hand upwards the private part from below until all the remaining drops of urine are discharged from the urethra, cough, bend towards the right or the left. After all this, wash your private area and stand up for a short while and sit again and repeat the Istibraa procedure as explained above.

One must not exaggerate too much in Istinjaa or Istibraa, once you are satisfied and you have done Istibraa then this will suffice for your purity, and it does not need to be redone multiple times. Spending unnecessary time and continuously repeating Istibraa will frustrate one and make matters of purity difficult and may also increase Waswasa (misgivings and whispers of Satan). Such whispers are tricks of Sahitaan to make one’s Deen and Ibadah difficult.

It is also advisable to sprinkle water around the private parts and the undergarments to avoid such Waswasah.

After observing this procedure, there is no need to wash the private parts thereafter.[3]

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
