Immersing a slaughtered chicken in hot (or boiling) water to remove its feathers.

fatwa-tt September 24, 2025

Question:
Question one:
What are the rule for immersing a slaughtered chicken in hot (or boiling) water to remove its feathers?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

To enable the easy removal of a slaughtered chicken’s feathers, people usually immerse it in hot water without removing the intestines or washing off blood and other impurities from it.

It will be permissible to immerse a slaughtered chicken (in the condition stated above) in water that is hot enough to enable easy removal of the feathers. Immersing it in boiling water for the same reason should be avoided.

However, if the chicken is kept in hot or boiling water for a duration that will cause the impurities of the intestines and the body of the chicken to be absorbed by its meat, then such a chicken will become unclean and Haram to consume.[i]
