Question:
As-Salamu ‘Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
The background:
I have a job offer from an IT company. The IT company creates software products that help to improve clients’ servers performance and security. The company wants me to lead a Client support team which will help to solve complicated technical issues related to products that the company provide to their clients.
The issue is that there are some clients which are conventional banks or insurance companies (approximately 20% of the clients from haram fields).
My questions are:
• Can I accept the offer and join the company?
• Will I be sinful if the people of my future team will be helping haram clients and I will have to force my team members to support all the clients including haram ones
• If I reject to personally interact with haram clients (in case of escalations for example), but my team members still must do those interactions with haram clients resolving their issues – will I be still sinful?
Thank you!
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
If the job does not require you to create software products for interest bearing transactions or improving them, then there is some allowance for you to do the job. However, due to nature of the bank’s business where a large portion of their profits are made from interest bearing transactions, it would be preferable not to work for the bank, even as a software developer.(See Quran:5:2)
