Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Islam is submitting oneself to the will of Allah ﷻ and following the Sunnah of Rasullah ﷺ. As Muslims we have to first know the order of Allah ﷻ regarding a matter and then we submit ourselves to it wholeheartedly. At times we may like it and it may be easy for us and at times it may not. Nevertheless, we are commanded to obey the order of Allah ﷻ and His Rasul ﷺ in all aspects of our lives.
It is not permissible for a Muslim to be homosexual or lesbian. Homosexuality is against the natural disposition (Fitrah) of human beings and one of the most repulsive major sins in Islam. Allah ﷻ created man and woman so that they can marry and procreate. This cannot take place without the male’s sperm and the female’s ovary. Homosexuality was initially practiced in the time of the prophet Lut (Lot). Allah ﷻ mentions the prohibition of this vile act in a number of places in the Noble Quran and He mentions the painful torment of the people who were engaged in it. This is also mentioned is man Hadith as well.
While such a lifestyle is more common and open than before and is being promoted openly in many “high” places, this will not change the position of a ruling which Allah ﷻ has clearly mentioned in the Quran. Therefore, we adjure you to obey and submit yourself to the order of Allah ﷻ.
Allah ﷻ mentions in the Quran:
And (We sent) Lut (Lot) when he said to his people, .Do you commit the shameful act in which nobody in the world has ever preceded you. You come to men lustfully instead of women. No, you are a people who cross the limits. The answer of his people was no other than to say, .Expel them from your town. They are a people who pretend too much purity. So, We saved him and his family, except his wife. She was one of those who remained behind. And We rained down upon them a rain. So, look! How was the fate of the sinners. (7:80-84)
In another verse Allah ﷻ says:
وَلُوطًا إِذْ قَالَ لِقَوْمِهِ إِنَّكُمْ لَتَأْتُونَ الْفَاحِشَةَ مَا سَبَقَكُمْ بِهَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ مِنَ الْعَالَمِينَ
And (We sent) Lut when he said to his people, .Indeed you commit the shameful act that no one in the worlds has ever preceded you in it (29:28)
Rasulullah ﷺ said may the curse of Allah (three times) be upon the person who commits the act of homosexuality[i].
The above-mentioned verses and Hadith shows the severity of this vile act in the sight of Allah ﷻ and His Rasul ﷺ. Regardless of how attractive some people may try to make this vile act look or how some may try to legitimize it, even from certain Muslims, it cannot legitimize what has been categorically prohibited in the Quran and Hadith. As Muslims, submission to the commands of Islam is incumbent and of utmost importance.
Allah ﷻ mentions in the Quran:
وَمَا كَانَ لِمُؤْمِنٍ وَلَا مُؤْمِنَةٍ إِذَا قَضَى اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَمْرًا أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُمُ الْخِيَرَةُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِمْ وَمَنْ يَعْصِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ ضَلَالًا مُبِينًا
It is not fitting for a believing man or a believing woman, once Allah and His messenger have decided a thing, that they should have a choice about their matter; and whoever disobeys Allah and His messenger, he indeed gets off the track, falling into an open error (33:36)
Rasulullah ﷺ said:
None of you truly believes until his desires are subjected to that which I was sent with.[ii]
Many a times, we knowingly disregard the orders of Allah ﷻ and follow our desires. In this regard, Allah ﷻ mentions in the Quran:
أَرَأَيْتَ مَنِ اتَّخَذَ إِلَهَهُ هَوَاهُ أَفَأَنْتَ تَكُونُ عَلَيْهِ وَكِيلًا
Have you seen him who has taken his whims and desires to be his god? Will you then be his guardian? (Quran 25:43)
An incident occurred in the time of Rasulullah ﷺ where a person asked to make something lawful which Allah ﷻhad prohibited. Rasulullah ﷺ handled this situation with divine wisdom. Read the following Hadith and see how closely it applies to your situation:
“A young man came to the Prophet ﷺ and he said, “O Messenger of Allah, give me permission to commit adultery.” The people turned to rebuke him, saying, “Quiet! Quiet!” The Prophet said, “Come here.” The young man came close and he told him to sit down. The Prophet said, “Would you like that for your mother?” The man said, “No, by Allah, may I be sacrificed for you.” The Prophet said, “Neither would people like it for their mothers. Would you like that for your daughter?” The man said, “No, by Allah, may I be sacrificed for you.” The Prophet said, “Neither would people like it for their daughters. Would you like that for your sister?” The man said, “No, by Allah, may I be sacrificed for you.” The Prophet said, “Neither would people like it for their sisters. Would you like that for your aunts?” The man said, “No, by Allah, may I be sacrificed for you.” The Prophet said, “Neither would people like it for their aunts.” Then, the Prophet placed his hand on him and he said, “O Allah, forgive his sins, purify his heart, and guard his chastity.” After that, the young man never again inclined to anything sinful.”[iii]
The above Hadith shows that not even Rasulullah ﷺ has the authority to permit that which Allah ﷻ has clearly and categorically prohibited. To have inclinations to be with the same sex is something from the evil whisperings of Shaytan. We cannot deny that you have these thoughts and they may be in your mind daily. However, as stated earlier, the prohibition of such a lifestyle is clearly mentioned in the Quran and authentic Hadith. So we cannot, in any way whatsoever give permission for a Muslim to do such a vile action.
As we see in the Hadith, Rasulullah ﷺ supplicated for the man to remove the evil thoughts of adultery in his mind as they are wrong. Therefore, we recommend that you make Dua to Allah ﷻ to remove the evil thoughts of homosexuality from your mind. We also advise you to spend more time in acts of obedience to Allah ﷻ. Start with being punctual in performing your five times daily prayer, especially in congregation, reading the Quran, reading books like Riyaadhus Saaliheen and involving in the Masjid activities. In Shaa Allah these actions will help you to occupy yourself with pious thoughts and save you from the whisperings of Shaytaan.
While you said that your thoughts and inclinations are not from social media, you clearly stated that you started to have these thoughts after watching a cartoon. This shows that, whether you want to admit it or not, the cartoon had an effect on you and it led to these thoughts. It is well known that cartoons, movies, games, music etc. have hidden messages in them which affect the minds of those who use them. This is a lengthy discussion which we will not go into. We therefore recommend that you stay away from cartoons, movies and any other thing on television or social media which may contribute to you keeping these thoughts.
