Blowing on food to cool it.

fatwa-tt January 27, 2025

Question:

ASSALAAMZ Sometimes parents tell their children to blow on food. Is this correct? jzk

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

There is a narration which mentions that Rasulullah ﷺ prohibited blowing into a vessel or breathing in it.

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Whenever anyone of you drinks water, he should not breathe in the drinking utensil….. (Sahih al Bukhari, 153)

This is further explained by Imam Abu Yusuf rahimahullah where he was asked if blowing unto food is makruuh (disliked), he replied that it is not as long as no sound was produced when blowing (only blowing lightly).[ii]

The best thing to do when the food is hot is to let it cool on its own then consume it and avoid blowing on it. Parents should not instruct their children to blow on the food, but should instruct them and teach them what is best.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best.

[i]  Sahih al Bukhari, 153
