I am planning to perform hajj this year and would like to know if the animal that would be sacrificed on my behalf in Makkah suffice for my Qurbani?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

It must be understood that there is a difference between Hady <\/em>and Udhiyah. <\/em>The former refers to that animal in which the person undergoing Hajj slaughters in the precincts of the Haram (Makkah)[1]<\/a> on the days of slaughtering ie. 10th<\/sup>, 11th<\/sup>, and 12th<\/sup> of Dhul Hijjah.[2]<\/a> Hady<\/em> is Wajib upon a person because of Nusuk (Hajj Rituals). If a person performing Hajj At-Tamattu<\/em> or Hajj Al-Qiraan<\/em> then Hady <\/em>becomes obligatory upon him, this is also known as Dam ash<\/em>–Shukr (<\/em>i.e.<\/em> sacrifice of thanksgiving). [3]<\/a> Dam ash<\/em>–Shukr <\/em>is an act of worship with the intention of thanking Allah \ufdfb for the opportunity of performing Hajj.[4]<\/a> If however a person is performing Hajj al<\/em>–Ifrad <\/em>then<\/em> Hady <\/em>would be optional and not obligatory. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

As for <\/em>Udhiyah<\/em> (Qurbani), this refers to that animal which is slaughtered on the days of slaughtering as mentioned above in one\u2019s country i.e. it is not restricted to the precincts of Makkah as opposed to the <\/em>Hady<\/em>.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

As stated above, <\/em>Hady<\/em> is only obligatory on an individual performing Hajj because it is a Hajj ritual, whereas <\/em>Udhiya<\/em> (Qurbani) becomes Wajib upon a person for reasons other than Hajj. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Udhiya<\/em> is obligatory upon a Muslim who is <\/em>baaligh<\/em> (mature) and sane, who during the days of Qurbaani, possesses wealth equivalent or surplus to the <\/em>Nisaab<\/em> (i.e. in excess of his basic needs and after deducting his liabilities) and is a <\/em>Muqeem<\/em> (i.e. a permanent or temporary resident). This is irrespective of whether or not he\/she is performing the Hajj.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore if an individual performing Hajj, meets the aforementioned requirements (mature, possess the Nisaab and is a Muqeem on any of the three days of slaughtering) <\/em>Udhiya<\/em> (Qurbani) will be obligatory<\/em> and will not be sufficed by <\/em>Dam ash<\/em>–Shukr.<\/em>[5]<\/strong><\/em><\/a> Thus in the case where the Hajj is either <\/em>Tamatu or Qiraan<\/em> the individual will have to slaughter two animals or take two shares, one will be for Hajj and the other, with the intention of <\/em>Udhiya<\/em> (Qurbaani). He can also depute someone to do <\/em>Udhiyah<\/em> on his behalf at his home country or anywhere else. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
