Question:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Is a one-time intention to fast before the initial time for fasting is required or do you make intention every day? I have heard it both ways concerning Ramadan, please advise.<\/span><\/p>\n

Answer:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

As-sal\u0101mu \u2018alaykum wa-rahmatull\u0101hi wa-barak\u0101tuh.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Messenger of Allah \ufdfa said Actions are by Intentions<\/em> {Al-Bukhari, Muslim}. Intention means to have a firm conviction in one\u2019s heart to do a particular act, seeking the pleasure of Allah \ufdfb.[1]<\/a> Fasting is indeed a great act of worship, thus intention is obligatory. Intention for fasting in Ramadhan is simply to confirm in your heart that you are going to Fast for the pleasure of Allah \ufdfb. Verbal expression of your intention is not a condition as the heart\u2019s conviction is sufficient.[2]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

As for your question, each day of fasting in the month of Ramadhan is regarded as an independent act of worship and therefore intention is necessary for each and every day of fasting.[3]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

The intention for each fast of Ramadhan can be made in any of the following two timings, except that the first timing is more rewarding.<\/span><\/p>\n

1) The night (after sunset) preceding the actual day of fast, this time extends until the break of dawn.<\/span><\/p>\n

NB- Intention to fast in Ramadhan is something naturally instilled in the heart of a believer during the nights of Ramadhan. The mere act of a person waking up before the break of dawn to partake of suhur (pre-dawn meal) also serves as a valid intention for fasting.[4]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

2) After the break of dawn (of the actual day of fast) until just before the Islamic mid-day, provided that no invalidators of fast existed from the break of dawn.[5]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

NB- Islamic mid-day this is calculated by adding the time from the break of dawn to sunset and then dividing it by two, the result is then added to the time at the break of dawn.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the Maliki school of Jurisprudence a one-time intention at the beginning of the month will suffice and there is no need to renew your intention every day.[6]<\/a> Therefore if you are a follower of the Maliki School you may adopt this view. However it is advisable that in addition to making a one-time intention for the entire month, you renew your intention each and every day.<\/span><\/p>\n
