At times of creedal\u00a0turmoil, the likes of Ahmad ibn Hanbal stood against the Mu\u2019tazil\u012b heresy; at times of political instability, personalities such as Sal\u0101h al-D\u012bn al-Ayy\u016bb\u012b mobilized the Muslim armies for combat; and at times of spiritual degradation, reformers like al-Ghaz\u0101l\u012b let the ink of their pens flow to revive the true spirit of scholarship and worship. Thus manifested All\u0101h\u2019s undertaking mentioned in the verse: \u201cWe have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it.\u201d (Qur\u2019\u0101n, 15:9)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The founding of an institution in Deoband, India, in the year 1866, was not the inception of a yet another sect. Rather, it was an extension of this continuous effort to preserve the noble Isl\u0101mic legacy. The scholars of Deoband have played a pivotal role in preserving Isl\u0101m, be it the Qur\u2019\u0101n, the Sunnah and their connected sciences or Isl\u0101m\u2019s prestigious history. It is sad to witness such a noble legacy and rich heritage go largely unnoticed by many students and scholars of Isl\u0101m. They have contributed tremendously in various fields of Isl\u0101m, from Qur\u0101\u2019nic exegesis, to jurisprudence, to Arabic, to political reform. However, their contribution towards the revival and preservation of the blessed Sunnah is most noteworthy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As a token of acknowledgment and a means of creating awareness, the following article was prepared to highlight their most important contributions in the field of Had\u012bth. More emphasis has been given to earlier scholars, although contemporary scholars are also occasionally cited. Among other sources, the book <em>D\u0101r al-Ul\u016bm Deoband<\/em> by Shaykh Muhammad \u2018Ubayd All\u0101h al-Q\u0101s\u012bm\u012b and a list published in a monthly newsletter by D\u0101r al-Ul\u016bm Deoband (Rajab, 1432 AH) were consulted. Honorific titles such as Shaykh, Mawl\u0101n\u0101, Muft\u012b, etc. were omitted from the lists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Muntasir Zam\u0101n<span id=\"more-651\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<strong>The Contribution of the Scholars of Deoband in the Field of Had<\/strong><strong>\u012b<\/strong><strong>th:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong> Reviving a Forgotten Legacy<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By Muntasir Zam\u0101n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To understand the contribution of the scholars of Deoband in the field of Had\u012bth, multiple aspects need to be addressed. However, for the sake of brevity, this paper will focus on two aspects: first, their Had\u012bth curriculum and second, their written works.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Had\u012bth Curriculum<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">D\u0101r al-\u2018Ul\u016bm Deoband and its affiliates enjoys one of the most comprehensive Had\u012bth curricula amongst the Isl\u0101mic institutions of the Indian subcontinent. The following set of traditional Had\u012bth literature forms the core of their Had\u012bth syllabus:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Al-Kutub al-Sittah <\/strong>(the six canonical Had\u012bth books: <strong>Sah\u012bh al-Bukh\u0101r\u012b<\/strong>, <strong>Sah\u012bh Muslim<\/strong>, <strong>Sunan al-Nasa\u2019\u012b<\/strong>, <strong>Sunan Ab\u012b D\u0101w\u016bd<\/strong>, <strong>Sunan al-Tirmidh\u012b<\/strong>, <strong>Sunan Ibn M\u0101jah<\/strong>)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Al-Muwatta\u2019 <\/strong>by M\u0101lik ibn Anas: the recension of Yahy\u0101 ibn Yahy\u0101 al-Masm\u016bd\u012b and the recension of Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Shayban\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Sharh Ma\u2018\u0101n\u012b al-\u0100th\u0101r<\/strong> by Abu Ja\u2018far al-Tah\u0101w\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Al-Sham\u0101\u2019il al-Muhammadiyyah<\/strong> by Ab\u016b \u2018\u012as\u0101 al-Tirmidh\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Mishk\u0101t al-Mas\u0101b\u012bh <\/strong>by al-Khat\u012bb al-Tabr\u012bz\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In addition, the following books are also part of the curriculum, although some are taught in only certain branches:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>\u2018Amal al-Yawm wa al-Laylah <\/strong>by Ab\u016b Bakr Ibn al-Sunn\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Al-Targh\u012bb wa al-Tarh\u012bb <\/strong>by \u2018Abd al-\u2018A\u017c\u012bm al-Mundhir\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Riy\u0101d al-S\u0101lih\u012bn <\/strong>by Muhy\u012b al-D\u012bn al-Nawaw\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>\u0100th\u0101r al-Sunan <\/strong>by al-Shawq al-N\u012bmaw\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Hay\u0101t al-Sah\u0101bah <\/strong>by Y\u016bsuf K\u0101ndhlaw\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Z\u0101d al-T\u0101lib\u012bn<\/strong> by Muhammad \u2018\u0100shiq Il\u0101h\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With respect to works on Had\u012bth terminology and its connected sciences, the following books are taught, some only at certain branches:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Ma\u2018rifat Anw\u0101\u2018 \u2018Ilm al-Had\u012bth<\/strong> (known as Muqaddimat Ibn al-Sal\u0101h) by Ab\u016b \u2018Amr Ibn al-Sal\u0101h<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Nuzhat al-Na\u017car Sharh Nukhbat al-Fikar<\/strong> by Ibn Hajar al-\u2018Asqal\u0101n\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Tadrib al-R\u0101w\u012b <\/strong>by J\u0101lal al-D\u012bn al-Suy\u016bt\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Al-Muqaddimah<\/strong> by \u2018Abd al-Haqq al-Dihlaw\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While teaching <em>al-Kutub al-Sittah<\/em>, the scholars would ensure that the collections were read from cover to cover because they disapproved of reading only select portions from them. Generally, the student\/s will read all six books from beginning to end while the teacher will listen, although at times the teacher will read while the students listen. A student will only receive a certificate of graduation once he has studied the six books and other Had\u012bth collections, keeping in mind that the final year of the higher studies at D\u0101r al-\u2018Ul\u016bm is specifically for the study of the six books, both in terms of text-transmission (riw\u0101yah) and in terms of commentary and explanation (dir\u0101yah).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In many branches, students are required to commit a certain number of had\u012bths to memory in the course of their studies, and in some branches, students are encouraged to memorize entire Had\u012bth collections, such as <em>Riy\u0101d al-S\u0101lih\u012bn<\/em> and <em>Mishk\u0101t al-Mas\u0101b\u012bh<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">D\u0101r al-Ul\u016bm Deoband also currently offers a two-year extensive post-graduate course on the specialization of Had\u012bth, wherein a student specializes in the sciences of Had\u012bth terminology, isn\u0101d grading, narrator evaluation, etc., under the tutelage of expert Had\u012bth teachers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Written Contributions<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The scholars of Deoband have made noteworthy contributions in the dissemination of Had\u012bth by means of publishing classical Had\u012bth books, making their own personal compilations, and making valuable manuscripts of classical hadith available for scholars and students. Among their written contributions in the form of commentaries, lectures, editing of manuscripts, annotation, compilation, and authorship are the following.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Commentaries<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Many of their learned scholars have written commentaries on <em>al-Kutub al-Sittah<\/em>, and other commonly available Had\u012bth works in Arabic, Urdu, and other languages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sah\u012bh al-Bukh\u0101r\u012b<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Anw\u0101r al-B\u0101r\u012b<\/strong> by Ahmad Rid\u0101 al-Bijnor\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Fadl al-B\u0101r\u012b f\u012b Fiqh al-Bukh\u0101r\u012b<\/strong> by \u2018Abd al-Ra\u2019\u016bf al-Haz\u0101raw\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Tuhfat al-Q\u0101r\u012b bi Mushkil\u0101t al-Bukh\u0101r\u012b<\/strong> by Muhammad Idr\u012bs K\u0101ndhlaw\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Farhat al-Q\u0101r\u012b \u2018an Sah\u012bh al-Bukh\u0101r\u012b<\/strong> by Shayr Zam\u0101n al-Haz\u0101raw\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Al-Kawthar al-J\u0101r\u012b f\u012b Sharh al-Bukh\u0101r\u012b<\/strong> by \u2018Abd al-Rahm\u0101n al-Murd\u0101n\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Talkh\u012bs al-Bukh\u0101r\u012b<\/strong> by Shams al-Duh\u0101 al-Zank\u016bn\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Is\u2018\u0101d al-B\u0101r\u012b<\/strong> by Sidd\u012bq Ahmad B\u0101ndaw\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Among works written on related aspects are the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Nibr\u0101s al-S\u0101r\u012b f\u012b Atr\u0101f al-Bukh\u0101r\u012b<\/strong> by \u2018Abd al-\u2018Az\u012bz Punj\u0101b\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>In\u2018\u0101m al-B\u0101r\u012b f\u012b Sharh Ash\u2018\u0101r<\/strong> <strong>al-Bukh\u0101ri <\/strong>by Muhammad \u2018\u0100shiq Il\u0101h\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Kit\u0101b al-Mu\u2018jam li Rij\u0101l al-Bukh\u0101r\u012b<\/strong> by Muhammad As\u012br al-Adraw\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Iz\u0101lat al-Qass\u0101s \u2018an Wajh Q\u0101l Ba\u2018d al-N\u0101s<\/strong> by Muj\u012bb al-Rahm\u0101n al-Bangladesh\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>M\u0101 Yanfa\u2018 al-N\u0101s f\u012b Sharh Q\u0101l Ba\u2018d al-N\u0101s <\/strong>Muhammad T\u0101hir al-Rah\u012bm\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The last two are treatises that explain the statement of Im\u0101m al-Bukh\u0101r\u012b in his <em>Sah\u012bh<\/em> \u201c<em>q\u0101l ba\u2019d al-n\u0101s<\/em> (some people said).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">They also dedicated works to the explanation of the chapter headings of Sah\u012bh al-Bukh\u0101r\u012b, like: Shaykh al-Hind Mahm\u016bd al-Hasan, Mawl\u0101n\u0101 Muhammad Idr\u012bs K\u0101ndhlaw\u012b, Mawl\u0101n\u0101 M\u0101jid \u2018Al\u012b M\u0101naw\u012b, Mawl\u0101n\u0101 Fakhr al-D\u012bn Mur\u0101dab\u0101d\u012b, Sayyid Badsh\u0101h Gul (his work is entitled Hamd al-Muta\u2019\u0101l\u012b). The most extensive work in this regard was written by Mawl\u0101n\u0101 Muhammad Zakariyy\u0101 K\u0101ndhlaw\u012b in Arabic entitled <strong>al-Abw\u0101b wa al-Tar\u0101jim<\/strong>, recently published in six large volumes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sah\u012bh Muslim<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After citing several renowned commentaries on <em>Sah\u012bh Muslim<\/em>, \u2018All\u0101mah al-Kawthari, the deputy to the last Shaykh al-Islam\u00a0of the Ottoman Empire, explains:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Truth be told, none of these commentaries fulfil the right of <em>Sahih Muslim<\/em>, of commentary and exposition from all perspectives, which concern the thirsty researchers [seeking] to reveal the secrets of the book. So if one commentary excels in jurisprudence or beliefs according to one school, for example, you find it lacking in the commentary of what relates to the remainder of the schools of practice and belief. This does not quench the thirst of the researcher. Or you find it neglecting the commentary of its introduction despite it being from the oldest of what the imams of hadith wrote in preparing the principles of the science of hadith like the book <em>al-Tamyiz<\/em> by Muslim, and such [a book] deserves a full commentary. And you find amongst the commentators those who omit commenting on the narrators altogether, although the researcher is in great need of this in areas of known criticism. Hence, when one of these commentaries pleases you from some perspectives, you find it does not quench your thirst from other perspectives. The remainder of the commentaries are similar. This is a substantial gap. We had the strongest desire that a commentary of <em>Sahih Muslim<\/em> appears in the world of print to fill this gap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now we are ones who have chanced upon our longed-for lost treasure in the production of <em>Fath al-Mulhim fi Sharh Sahih<\/em> <em>Muslim<\/em> in its wonderful dress and brilliant suit in a number of Indian prints.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Fath al-Mulhim<\/strong>, the commentary in reference, was authored by Mawl\u0101n\u0101 Shabb\u012br Ahmad \u2018Uthm\u0101n\u012b. However, he passed away prior to its completion. Thereafter, Muft\u012b Taq\u012b \u2018Uthm\u0101n\u012b, a leading scholar from Pakistan, took the initiative to complete it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Many of them wrote specifically on Im\u0101m Muslim\u2019s introduction to his <em>Sah\u012bh <\/em>in view of its importance and benefit. The most outstanding among them was by \u2018Al\u012b Ahmad al-A\u2018\u017cam\u012b in Arabic, which unfortunately has yet to be published. There are others written in Urdu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sunan al-Nasa\u2019\u012b<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Al-Muktaf\u0101 bi Sharh al-Mujtab\u0101<\/strong> by Ahmad Hasan al-Fattan\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">J\u0101mi\u2018 al-Tirmidh\u012b<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Al-T\u012bb al-Shadh\u012b<\/strong> by Ashf\u0101q al-Rahm\u0101n K\u0101ndhlaw\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Hadiyyat al-Ahwadh\u012b<\/strong> by Ibr\u0101h\u012bm Baly\u0101w\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Tanq\u012bh al-Shadh\u012b<\/strong> by Shams al-Haqq al-Afgh\u0101n\u012b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Nazl al-Thaw\u012b <\/strong>by Asghar Husayn<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Ma\u2018\u0101rif al-Sunan<\/strong> by Muhammad Y\u016bsuf Ban\u016br\u012b. He included therein the valuable discourses and research of his teacher, Anwar Sh\u0101h al-Kashm\u012br\u012b. He passed away before completing the work. An effort is currently being made to complete this monumental work<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Khaz\u0101\u2019in al-Sunan <\/strong>by Sarfar\u0101z Kh\u0101n Safdar<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mawl\u0101n\u0101 Sayyid Badsh\u0101h Gul and Mawl\u0101n\u0101 Muhammad M\u016bs\u0101 R\u016bh\u0101n\u012b B\u0101z\u012b have also written commentaries on it<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mawl\u0101n\u0101 Fadl All\u0101h al-Rahm\u0101n\u012b wrote a commentary on <strong>\u2018Ilal al-Tirmidh\u012b<\/strong> and Mawl\u0101n\u0101 Zakariyy\u0101 K\u0101ndhlaw\u012b wrote a commentary on <strong>al-Sham\u0101\u2019il al-Muhammadiyyah<\/strong> of al-Timidh\u012b.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mawl\u0101n\u0101 Y\u016bsuf Ban\u016br\u012b started work on a book with the title\u00a0<strong>Lubb al-Lub\u0101b f\u012b Takhr\u012bj M\u0101 Yaq\u016blu al-Tirmidh\u012b wa f\u012b al-B\u0101b,<\/strong>\u00a0in which he attempted to source and reference the hadiths Imam al-Tirmidh\u012b in his <em>Sunan<\/em> alluded to with the words \u201c<em>wa f\u012b al-b\u0101b \u2018an\u201d<\/em>\u00a0(There are other reports in this chapter from so and so).\u201d However, because of other engagements and responsibilities, he was only able to complete a small portion. As such, he delegated the job of completing the book to Muft\u012b Wal\u012b Hasan, who also managed to complete only on a small portion because of his teaching and other commitments. Fortunately, from its inception until the present day, these lectures were recorded. Thus, their lecture notes, containing treasures of knowledge, were found among many of the graduates of D\u0101r al-\u2018Ul\u016bm. Many of them went on to print whatever they possessed and disseminated it. This genre of books has become a beneficial library of immense academic value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These dictations are similar to the encyclopedic Had\u012bth commentaries and are useful for students, researchers, scholars, and teachers alike due to the mature and insightful explanations they offer \u2013 which is a natural result of the extensive experience of the lecturers in teaching these Had\u012bth collections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Most books of this genre are dictations on <em>al-Kutub al-Sittah<\/em> in Arabic and some are in Urdu. The most outstanding among them are the dictations of Mawl\u0101n\u0101 Rash\u012bd Ahmad Gangoh\u012b and Mawl\u0101n\u0101 Anwar Sh\u0101h Kashm\u012br\u012b, because the students and scholars who compiled, organized, reviewed and thereafter disseminated them were also experts in the field. All the dictations of Mawl\u0101n\u0101 Rash\u012bd Ahmad Gangoh\u012b were printed posthumously after being edited and annotated by Mawl\u0101n\u0101 Muhammad Zakariyy\u0101 or by some of his reputable companions and students. Countless research papers, treatises, monographs and lecture notes on numerous subjects of Had\u012bth, in particular those by contemporary scholars of Deoband, have not been discussed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The numerous works presented in this short article are\u00a0part\u00a0of the great legacy bequeathed to the students, teachers, researchers, and scholars of the ummah by the scholars of Deoband. They left no stone unturned in the service of the Sunnah: its preservation, revival, dissemination, and explanation to the masses. Despite their monumental service to Had\u012bth and its related sciences, it is unfortunate that this great service has gone largely unnoticed by many students and scholars of Isl\u0101m. In fact, an effort is often made to portray a negative image of these luminaries and to give people the impression that the scholars of Deoband are far behind in the field of Had\u012bth!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is hoped that the reader now has a basic appreciation for the works rendered by these illustrious personalities in the service of the Sunnah, which ought to be viewed as an extension to the continuous effort to preserve the noble Isl\u0101mic legacy.
