Is making individual Dua after the obligatory prayer a practice of the Holy Prophet peace be upon him? <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Answer<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

As-sal\u0101mu \u2018alaykum wa-rahmatull\u0101hi wa-barak\u0101tuh<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Dua literally meaning “invocation, supplication\u201d. Thus making dua is to supplicate to Allah \ufdfb and invoke His name. It is one of the greatest act of worship. The Messenger of Allah \ufdfa said: \u0627\u0644\u062f\u0639\u0627\u0621 \u0645\u062e \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0628\u0627\u062f\u0629\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDu\u2019a is the essence of worship\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Dua after Salah is authentically established in the Ahaadith of the Messenger of Allah \ufdfa<\/span><\/p>\n

(1)Abu Umama radhiyallahu anu narrated that the Messanger of Allah \ufdfa was asked, which dua is more answered and acceptable by Allah\ufdfb? He \ufdfa replied; the dua which is made in the latter portion of the night and the dua made after the Fardh Salah.<\/span><\/p>\n

(2) Mu`adh bin Jabal radhiyallahu anu reported that The Messenger of Allah \ufdfa held his hand and said, “O Mu`adh, By Allah, I love you, and I advise you not to leave out Dua after every Fardh Salah by saying: \u201cO Allah, help me remember You, expressing gratitude to You and worship You in the best manner”.<\/span><\/p>\n

(3) Abu Bakrah radhiyallahu anu reported that the Holy Prophet \ufdfa used to make dua after every salah saying; O Allah! I seek refuge in you from infidelity and poverty.<\/span><\/p>\n

(4) Zaid bin Arqam radhiyallahu anu said that he heard the Holy Prophet \ufdfa<\/strong> making dua after Salah saying \u201cO Allah! Our Lord and Lord of everything\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

(7) Harith bin Muslim radhiyallahu anu reported that, when the Holy Prophet performed Fajr and Magrib Salah, before speaking he would say \u201cOh Allah! Save me from the fire\u201d seven times\u2026\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n

(8) Thawbaan radhiyallahu anu reported that, when The Holy Prophet \ufdfa completed his Salah he used to seek forgiveness three times.<\/span><\/p>\n

(9) Ali radhiyallahu anhu reported that the Holy Prophet \ufdfa, after making salaam from Salah, he used to say \u201cOh Allah forgive me my past and future sins\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The aforementioned Ahaadith clearly shows the permissibility of making dua after Salah and moreover it highlights that making dua after Salah is an established practice of the Holy Prophet \ufdfa. Thus negating this practice would be negating the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet \ufdfa.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Juristic Ruling of Dua after Salah<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The vast majority of scholars which includes the four followed schools of Islamic jurisprudence and Imams of Ahaadith have ruled that dua after Salah is not only legislated but also an established practice of the Messenger of Allah \ufdfa and the status of this act is classified as Sunnah Mustahabah.<\/span><\/p>\n

Imam al-Bukhari has placed in his Sahih the chapter \u201cDua after Salah\u201d explicitly stating after the completion of Salah and not only restricted to dua before salaam. Hafidh Ibn Hajar states in his commentary that this chapter clearly refutes those who deny the permissibility of dua after Salah.[3]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NB<\/strong>– Those who negate the permissibility of dua after Salah is a small minority of scholars who have based their verdict on four main factors:<\/span><\/p>\n

(1)<\/strong> A restricted and biased interpretation of the term \u0627\u0644\u0635\u0644\u0627\u0629 \u062f\u0628\u0631 \u201cdubur as-Salah\u201d which is found in the aforementioned Ahaadith. This term has two implications:<\/span><\/p>\n

(a) <\/strong> \u0642\u062f \u064a\u0631\u0627\u062f \u0628\u0647 \u0622\u062e\u0631 \u062c\u0632\u0621 \u0645\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0635\u0644\u0627\u0629<\/strong> Ending, tail, last portion of the Salah (inclusive) i.e. before salaam.<\/span><\/p>\n

(b) \u0648\u0642\u062f \u064a\u0631\u0627\u062f \u0628\u0647 \u0645\u0627 \u0628\u0639\u062f \u0627\u0646\u0642\u0636\u0627\u0626\u0647\u0627<\/strong> After the completion of Salah (not being inclusive).<\/span><\/p>\n

Those who negate the permissibility of dua after the completion of Salah restrict the term \u201cdubur as-salah\u201d to the first implication only.<\/span><\/p>\n

Answer to misconception<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Both implications are correct and its usage is proven in The Holy Quran, Ahaadith of the Messenger of Allah \ufdfa and the Arabic Language. Thus such a restriction is baseless in the Shariah as it contradicts numerous supporting textual evidences.[4]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

(2)<\/strong> The Hadith of Aisha radiyallu anha :<\/span><\/p>\n

The Holy Prophet <\/em>\ufdfa<\/em> would not remain after completing salah longer than<\/em> the time it would take to recite <\/em>“<\/em>Allaahumma antas-salaam wa minkas-salaam tabaarakta yaa dhal-jalaali wal-ikraam.<\/em>“<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Answer to misconception:<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This narration of Aisha radiyallu anha cannot be used to indicate the impermissibility of dua after Salah since such an action was reported by numerous companions of the Holy Prophet \ufdfa who witnessed the Holy Prophet \ufdfa performing Salah and who were directly instructed by him to make dua after Salah.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aisha radiyallu anha reported according to her knowledge and her observations, and that does not negate the narrations of other companions which shows clearly the permissibility of dua after Salah.[5]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

(3) The Hadith of Umm Salamah radiyallu anha which states that after the completion of Salah the Holy Prophet \ufdfa<\/em> would not remain seated except for a little moment and such time is not sufficient for Dua.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ummu Salamah Salamah radiyallu anha reported that whenever the Messenger of Allah would complete his Salah with Taslim, the women used to get up immediately to leave while the Holy Prophet (peace be upon Him) would remain at his place for a moment before getting up.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Answer to misconception:<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Holy Prophet, peace be upon Him, would remain seated at his place for a duration of time it would take for the women to leave, so that they would not leave together with the men. This however does not justify the impermissibility of dua after Salah and furthermore, that moment mentioned in the hadith is not as little as one may think, rather it is ample time for Dhikr and Dua.<\/span><\/p>\n

Imam al-Bukhari narrates on the authority of Ummu Salamah radiyallu anha<\/span><\/p>\n

It is correct to say that Dhikr was an established practice of the messenger of Allah \ufdfa since it is proven from hadith, similarly dua is also an established practice of the messenger of Allah as it is also proven from authentic Ahaadith as mentioned above.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also many of the Dhikr that is reported after Salah has the meaning of Dua. For example the Hadith of Thawban radiyallu anhu recorded by Imam Muslim:<\/span><\/p>\n

It does not matter what wording is used, whether the wording of Dhikr is used i.e. (\u0623\u0633\u062a\u063a\u0641\u0631 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647) Astaghfirullah<\/em> or the wording of Dua is used ie. Imam Abu Dawood has a chapter in his Sunnan;<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOh Allah! Have mercy on me and relieve me of my distress\u201d <\/em>Thereafter Allah \ufdfb mentions (\u0641\u0627\u0633\u062a\u062c\u0628\u0646\u0627 \u0644\u0647) So We answered\/replied to him<\/em> (his call\/dua)<\/em> [7]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Hafidh Ibn Hajar also illustrates this point in his commentary of Sahih al-Bukhari under the chapter \u201cDua after Salah\u201d[8]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

In conclusion making dua after the Fardh Salah is an established practice of The Holy Prophet \ufdfa .Negating such a practice would be incorrect.<\/span><\/p>\n
