Question: <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Is a non-mahram female’s voice meant not to be heard by males? Take for example listening to the radio. Women read the news. Should this be listened to? The flawed analogy of some will no doubt be that Sahabah (May Allah Ta’ala Be Pleased With Them) would ask Hadhrat A’isha Radiallahu Anha rulings & learn from her, thus legitimising the presence of female presenters on so-called Islamic radio stations. Is this justified? When can a non mahram woman’s voice be listened to? What would constitute necessity?<\/span><\/p>\n

Answer:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

As-sal\u0101mu \u2018alaykum wa-rahmatull\u0101hi wa-barak\u0101tuh.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Allah Ta\u2019\u0101 la has created the female voice naturally attractive and placed in it the ability to arouse and incite passion in men. This is a reality which cannot be denied. Even the psychologists are in agreement with this fact.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the reason why Allah Ta\u2019\u0101 la commanded the wives of our beloved Nabi \ufdfa especially, and all Muslim women in general, to abstain from conversing with non-Mahram men in a soft and attracting tone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Allah Ta\u2019\u0101 la says:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cO wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women. If you fear Allah, then do not be soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease (of hypocrisy or evil desire for adultery, etc.) should be moved with lust.\u201d (Surah al-Ahzab: 32)<\/span><\/p>\n

Allah Ta\u2019\u0101 la, the Creator, being fully aware of the propensities of all things he has created, commands that women exercise hijab on their voices as well, even when there is a need to speak, they should not speak to men in soft and tender tones.<\/span><\/p>\n

It has been narrated from some of the wives of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) that, after the revelation of the above mentioned verse, when the need arose for them to converse with a non-Mahram male, they would do so by placing their hands over their mouths. This was to prevent any softness or incitement in their voices. (Hadith recorded by Darqutni in his Sunan with an authentic chain of narrators).<\/span><\/p>\n

The great Hanafi scholar Imam Abu Bakr al-Jassas says in his Ahkam al-Qur\u2019an (his excellent work on the verses of the Qur\u2019an relating to law):<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis verse (above-mentioned) indicates the impermissibility of women raising their voices in the presence of non-Mahram males, as this may lead to Fitna. This is why our (Hanafi) scholars have declared the calling of Adhan for women as Makruh, as she will need to raise her voice, which is not permissible.\u201d (Ahkam al-Qur\u2019an, 5\/229)<\/span><\/p>\n

The ruling regarding the voice of a woman.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The ruling regarding the voice of a woman will be based on whether her voice is part of her Awra<\/em> or not. (Awra is that part of a female that must be concealed from Ghair Mahram men)<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the Fuqaha there is a difference of opinion regarding a woman\u2019s voice being part of her Awra or not. The classical Hanafi view is that it is<\/strong> part<\/strong> of her Awra. This view is supported by the following:<\/span><\/p>\n
