assalaamu alaykum. A Taxi Driver (Male) transport passengers both male & female as a livelihood. In our society in Trinidad at times, there may be only female passengers in the Taxi who are not mahram. and they may even be seated in the front seat. What is the Islamic ruling on this particular issue. jaza kallah.<\/span><\/p>\n

As-sal\u0101mu \u2018alaykum wa-rahmatull\u0101hi wa-barak\u0101tuh.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Islam strictly prohibits mixing and unnecessary interact of strange (non-mahram) males and females. Furthermore, The Prophet (Sallallahu Alahi Wa Sallam) has forbidden a man to be alone with a strange (non-mahram) woman.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200f\u200f.Narrated Ibn `Abbas (Radhiallahu Anhu):<\/span><\/p>\n

That he heard the Prophet (\ufdfa) saying, “It is not permissible for a man to be alone with a woman, and no lady should travel except with a Mahram (i.e. her husband or a person whom she cannot marry according to Shari\u2019ah in any case; e.g. her father, brother, etc.).” (Sahih al-Bukhari 3006)<\/span><\/p>\n

While we understand the difficulties a taxi driver may face while trying to refrain from interacting with female clients, he must try his best to do so. Whatever interaction can possibly be avoided, it is necessary he abstains from such.<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore, it would not be permissible to accommodate female passengers in the front seat. They may be accommodated in the back seat[1]<\/a>. He should also ensure a Muslim female passenger does not have to sit next to a strange male.<\/span><\/p>\n
