Question:<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Aruba the ground is mostly limestone. It\u2019s difficult to bury the dead in normal graves. The local people who live there bury tombs, how should a Muslim be buried there?<\/span><\/p>\n

Answer:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

As-sal\u0101mu \u2018alaykum wa-rahmatull\u0101hi wa-barak\u0101tuh.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

What you have mentioned is a cryptal burial system which is adopted by Non-Muslims in many countries. A crypt is a concrete chambered burial vault<\/a> used to store the deceased. It is located above the surface of the earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

This method of burial is not in accordance to the laws of the Shariah, in fact it is not even considered a burial. An Islamic burial is to place the deceased in a grave within the earth.[1]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

This is the method of burial commanded by Allah Ta\u2019ala since the time of Adam (peace be upon him) until The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him).<\/span><\/p>\n

Allah Ta\u2019ala mentions in Surah Al-Maidah<\/span><\/p>\n

There are two types of graves which are permissible in Islam:[6]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

(1) The Lahad; which is a grave in which its sides are firm, then a recess is dug on the Qiblah side to allow placing the body.<\/span><\/p>\n

(2) The Shaqq; which is a trench that is dug in the middle of the grave.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both types of graves require that the earth be dug, wherein the body is placed. Therefore it would not be permissible for a Muslim to be buried in such a manner.<\/span><\/p>\n

If the cryptal burial is the law of that country then the family members\/guardians should shift the body to the closest cemetery or to its native land for a proper burial if possible.[7]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

If however that is difficult due to financial restraints or government regulations, then it will be permissible to be bury the deceased in the crypt because of compulsion.[8]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

However, based on our investigations cryptal burial is not mandatory in Aruba, therefore it would not be permissible to adopt such method of burial by choice.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

You have stated that the ground is mostly limestone which makes it difficult to bury in normal graves. This however, would not be considered a valid reason, since it is not a requirement by the Shariah that the grave be dug a full six feet in depth nor is it a requirement that the grave be perfect in shape.[9]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
