It is stated in Al-Durr al-Mukht\u0101r<\/em> of `All\u0101mah Haskaf\u012b (rahimahull\u0101h):<\/span><\/p>\n

[Imam al-Tumurt\u0101sh\u012b says] \u201cIt is mustahab to pare one\u2019s nails\u2026on the day of Jumu`ah.\u201d\u2026[`All\u0101mah Haskaf\u012b says]: And it is narrated in the commentary of Al-Ghazz\u0101wiyah: \u201cHe (the Messenger of All\u0101h sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) would begin from the right index finger until the pinky finger. Then, he would continue from his left pinky finger until he reached his (left) thumb and he would finish (paring his nails) with the right thumb.\u201d[1]<\/strong><\/a> Imam Ghaz\u0101l\u012b also mentions a sound reasoning for this in his Ihy\u0101\u2019 `Ul\u016bm al-D\u012bn. However, there is no established narration regarding the nails of the feet\u2026<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

I say [i.e. `All\u0101mah Haskaf\u012b]: It is mentioned in al-Maw\u0101hib al-Ladunniyah that H\u0101fiz ibn Hajar says: It is mustahab (to pare the nails) whenever one has the need to do so and there is neither any proof anywhere of a specific method of paring one\u2019s nails nor is there any narration from Nab\u012b (sallall\u0101hu `alayhi wa sallam) mentioning a specific day (for paring one\u2019s nails).[2]<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Commenting on the last paragraph, `All\u0101mah Ibn `\u0100bid\u012bn (rahimahull\u0101h) says in his Radd al-Muht\u0101r <\/em>(also known as \u201cSh\u0101m\u012b<\/em>\u201d):<\/span><\/p>\n

Imam Suy\u016bt\u012b has also mentioned this (in the following words): Imam ibn Daq\u012bq al-`\u012ad rejects these couplets [that are narrated from `\u0100l\u012b radiyall\u0101hu `anh mentioning the cutting of nails in the order mentioned above] and he also says that there is no consideration for any specific method. There is no source for such a thing in the Shar\u012b`ah. It is also not permissible to have the belief that it (i.e. the method related) is mustahab because \u201cmustahab\u201d is a \u201c<\/em>hukm\u201d<\/em> in Shar\u012b`ah and for any \u201chukm\u201d it is necessary to have a proof for it. To show leniency in such a thing is also incorrect.[3]<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

From the statement of `All\u0101mah Ibn `\u0100bid\u012bn (rahimahull\u0101h), it is clear that the oft mentioned method of paring one\u2019s nails starting from the right index finger has no basis.[4]<\/a> H\u0101fiz ibn Hajar (rahimahull\u0101h) also makes mention of this in his commentary of Bukh\u0101r\u012b, Fath al-B\u0101r\u012b<\/em>.[5]<\/a> However, he further states that one may still pair one\u2019s finger nails by beginning with the right hand and then the move on to the left hand[6]<\/a> as the Messenger of All\u0101h (sallall\u0101hu `alayhi wa sallam) would prefer beginning all good deeds from the right. It is narrated in the Sah\u012bh <\/em>of Imam Bukh\u0101r\u012b (rahimahull\u0101h) on the authority of `\u0100ishah (radiyall\u0101hu `anh\u0101):<\/span><\/p>\n

The Prophet (sallall\u0101hu `alayhi wa sallam) liked to start from the right side when wearing shoes, combing his hair, cleaning (or washing) himself, and in doing anything else.[7]<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

In conclusion, it is best that one does not adopt a specific method in pairing one\u2019s nails; however, one may begin from the right hand before paring the left as the Messenger of All\u0101h (sallall\u0101hu `alayhi wa sallam) preferred to do all good actions whilst beginning from the right.[8]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
