{"id":325,"date":"2014-11-07T19:41:19","date_gmt":"2014-11-07T19:41:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fatwa-tt.com\/?p=325"},"modified":"2017-11-09T03:50:48","modified_gmt":"2017-11-09T07:50:48","slug":"haircuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fatwa-tt.com\/index.php\/haircuts\/","title":{"rendered":"Haircuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Question<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What is the ruling of haircuts?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Answer<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Men are permitted to cut their hair.This is based on the fact that there are numerous narrations which mention that Rasulullah\u00a0<em>sallallahualaihiwasallam<\/em>\u00a0and the Sahabah\u00a0<em>radhiallahuanhum\u00a0<\/em>cut, trimmed or shaved their hair. However, there are; as with any other aspect of a Muslims life; certain restrictions and boundaries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Everyone is attracted to the latest fashion and style donned by celebrities, pop stars, sports stars and models. Everybody wants to be identified as a person who is in-sync with the times and in\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0co-ordination with the latest\u00a0trend. This ranges from the clothes such people wear to the foods they eat; and the hairstyles they don.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hairstyles play a major part in the way a person is perceived by society. Certain hairstyles display chivalry and boyishness, whereas other styles display that a person is a business man or a serious person. Certain hairstyles link a person to a certain group, clique or organization. Other people choose to style their hair to display their personality; be it daring, carefree, lazy, adventurous, free spirited etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some of these hairstyles are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Crew cut\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2022Buzz cut\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2022Dreadlocks\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2022Fohawk\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2022Mowhawk<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Flattop\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2022Afro\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2022Spikes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2022Mullet\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2022Pompadour<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rattail\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2022Caesar cut\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2022Cornrows\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2022Shag<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Undercut\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2022Curtains\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2022Half ponytail\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2022High top fade\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2022Line up<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tonsure\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2022Waves\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2022Comb over\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2022Emo hair\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2022Bangs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0A<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">s Muslims we should protect our identity. Islam is our way of lifein everything.It is not restricted to the masjid, house or workplace. It advises us on what we can and can\u2019t wear, what we can and can\u2019t eat; likewise it has given us specific guidelines pertaining to our appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Allah Ta\u1ffe\u0101l\u0101 states in the Holy Quran:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u0642\u064f\u0644 \u0652\u0625\u0650\u0646 \u0652\u0643\u064f\u0646\u0652\u062a\u064f\u0645 \u0652\u062a\u064f\u062d\u0650\u0628\u064f\u0651\u0648\u0646\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0644\u064e\u0651\u0647\u064e \u0641\u064e\u0627\u062a\u064e\u0651\u0628\u0650\u0639\u064f\u0648\u0646\u0650\u064a \u064a\u064f\u062d\u0652\u0628\u0650\u0628\u0652\u0643\u064f\u0645\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0644\u064e\u0651\u0647\u064f \u0648\u064e\u064a\u064e\u063a\u0652\u0641\u0650\u0631\u0652\u0644\u064e\u0643\u064f\u0645 \u0652\u0630\u064f\u0646\u064f\u0648\u0628\u064e\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(3\/31)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cSay: (Oh Muhammad) If you love Allah then follow me and Allah will love you and He will forgive your sins.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It was the noble habit of Rasulullah<em>sallallahualaihiwasallam<\/em>\u00a0to keep long hair and it has also been proven that he shaved the hair of his\u00a0<em>mubaarak<\/em>\u00a0head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If one doesn\u2019t want to keep long hair or a bald head, he may adopt the hairstyles of the pious people in one\u2019s vicinity because Allah Ta\u1ffe\u0101l\u0101 states in the Holy Quran:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u0648\u064e\u0627\u062a\u064e\u0651\u0628\u0650\u0639\u0652 \u0633\u064e\u0628\u0650\u064a\u0644\u064e \u0645\u064e\u0646\u0652 \u0623\u064e\u0646\u064e\u0627\u0628\u064e \u0625\u0650\u0644\u064e\u064a\u064e\u0651<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(31\/15)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cAnd follow the way of those people who repent to me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It should be kept in mind that our actions are judged by our intentions. If a person keeps long hair to emulate the Prophet<em>sallallahualayhiwasallam<\/em>, then he is practicing a Sunnah for which he will be rewarded. However, if he keeps long hair to emulate the appearance of a certain religious sect or to resemble women, then he is doing something impermissible as will be discussed below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Generally, there are three factors that render a haircut impermissible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u0642\u0632\u0639(Partially shaved)[ii]<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u062a\u0634\u0628\u0647(Imitating non- Muslims\/ women)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">iii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u0634\u0647\u0631\u0629\u00a0(Standing out \u2013showy\/ unusual hair )[iii]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Qaza\u2019\u00a0<\/em>is impermissible because of the following Had\u012bth:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Umar bin N\u0101fi\u2019 that N\u0101fi\u2019 narrates that Ibn Umar\u00a0<em>radhiallahuanhuma<\/em>\u00a0said: Rasulullah <em>sallallahualaihiwasallam<\/em>\u00a0prohibited us from\u00a0<em>Qaza\u2019<\/em>. IbnN\u0101fi\u2019 enquired: what is\u00a0<em>Qaza\u2019<\/em>? He replied:\u00a0<strong>\u201cTo shave one part of a child\u2019s head and leave the remaining part unshaven.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some of the haircuts mentioned above fall under the ambit of\u00a0<em>Qaza\u2019\u00a0<\/em>such as the: crew cut, flattop, rattail and mowhawk (when part of the head is shaved).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The second factor that renders a haircut impermissible is imitating non-Muslims, <em>fussaaq<\/em>(sinners) and women <em>.<\/em>Rasulullah <em>sallallahualaihiwasallam<\/em>\u00a0said:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u0639\u064e\u0646 \u0650\u0627\u0628\u0652\u0646\u0650 \u0639\u064f\u0645\u064e\u0631\u064e\u060c\u0642\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e: \u0642\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e \u0631\u064e\u0633\u064f\u0648\u0644 \u064f\u0627\u0644\u0644\u064e\u0651\u0647\u0650 \u0635\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0651\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647\u064f \u0639\u064e\u0644\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0647\u0650 \u0648\u064e\u0633\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0651\u0645\u064e: \u0645\u064e\u0646\u0652 \u062a\u064e\u0634\u064e\u0628\u064e\u0651\u0647 \u064e\u0628\u0650\u0642\u064e\u0648\u0652\u0645 \u064d\u0641\u064e\u0647\u064f\u0648\u064e \u0645\u0650\u0646\u0652\u0647\u064f\u0645\u0652<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If a person has a hairstyle that is generally perceived to be affiliated with a certain religious group, it will be impermissible to don. The same ruling applies to feminine hairstyles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Also, if a person wears a certain hairstyle because such and such a celebrity\/ pop star\/ footballer wears\u2019 it, this will be impermissible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">E.g. A teenager is infatuated with a pop star. He buys the same clothes he wears, buys the same shoes he wears and wears the same hairstyle he has, this will be impermissible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If one is not sure as to whether keeping a certain hairstyle falls under the ambit of imitating the non- believers then he should abstain from it. Rasulullah <em>sallallahualaihiwasallam<\/em>\u00a0is reported to have said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u062f\u064e\u0639\u0652 \u0645\u064e\u0627 \u064a\u064e\u0631\u0650\u064a\u0628\u064f\u0643\u064e \u0625\u0650\u0644\u064e\u0649 \u0645\u064e\u0627 \u0644\u0627\u064e \u064a\u064e\u0631\u0650\u064a\u0628\u064f\u0643\u064e<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cLeave that which puts you in doubt and implement that thing which does not put you in doubt.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The third factor that renders a hairstyle impermissible is\u00a0<em>shuhrah<\/em>(an unusual hairstyle that causes one to stand out).
