Question:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the ruling for keeping dogs? What about dogs which can be used for training purposes, hunting, sniffer dogs to find drugs which has proven quite successful, dogs trained to seize criminals, dogs used as guide dogs for the blind etc.?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Answer:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As-sal\u0101mu \u2018alaykum wa-rahmatull\u0101hi wa-barak\u0101tuh.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In principle, it is impermissible to keep dogs merely for enjoyment or as a pet[1]<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abu Talha (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (\ufdfa) said, \u201cAngels do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or an animate picture. (Bukhari)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abu Huraira (Radhiyallaahu \u00c1nhu) reports that the Prophet (\ufdfa) said, \u201cWhoever acquires a dog, with the exception of a dog for hunting, or guarding sheep, or protecting the harvest, then two qiraat (a large portion) of his reward will be diminished every day.\u201d (Bukhari and Muslim)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 However, dogs that are kept for a valid reason in the Shari\u2018ah are excluded from this rule. This includes sheep dogs, guard dogs and hunting dogs from which benefit is derived.[2]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hence, it will be permissible to keep a dog for security purposes, to detect illegal substances, for guiding a blind person, for policing and for tracking lost people etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The saliva of a dog is Najis (impure). if it touches the clothes or body, that portion also becomes impure and must be washed thrice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
