TARAWEEH GUIDELINES DURING THIS PANDEMIC \/ LOCKDOWN<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

IMPORTANCE: It is Sunnah Mu\u2019akkadah for males and females to perform 20 Rakats\nof Taraweeh Salah. Nabi (\ufdfa) mentioned: \u201cWhoever\nstands in Ramadhan (i.e. Taraweeh) with Iman and hoping for reward from Allah,\nall his past sins will be forgiven\u201d. (Bukhari, 1\/16)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NUMBER OF RAKATS: Ibn Abbas (Radhiyallahu Anhu) narrated that the Prophet (\ufdfa) used to pray twenty raka\u2019at followed by\nWitr in the month of Ramadan. (Musannaf ibn Abi Shaibah, 2\/164)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imam Shaf\u2018i (Rahmatullahi \u2018Alaih)\nsaid that I have always found people in Makkah offering twenty raka\u2019at.(Sunan\nAl-Tirmidhi, 2\/162)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taraweeh in Ramadhan was established\nby Rasulullah (\ufdfa) himself. Thereafter,\nSayyiduna \u2018Umar (radhiallahu anhu) unified the Ummah upon 20 rakaats of Taraweeh.\nHis decision to unify the Taraweeh behind one Imam was met with approval and\nconsensus of all the Sahaabah (radhiallahu anhum) and Tabi\u2019een of that era,\nwithout record of any objection. For the centuries that followed thereafter,\nthis remained the uninterrupted practice of the entire Ummah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NB: The number of Rakaats of Taraweeh in the Haram (Makkah, Madinah) is\nreduced this Ramadhan to 10 Rakaats. This is only due to the pandemic,\nand to reduce the time of the congregation. Therefore one praying at home etc.\nshould complete the full 20 Rakaats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

COMPLETING QUR\u2019AN: Reading 20 Rakats of Taraweeh is a separate Sunnah and to complete\nan entire Qur\u2019an in Taraweeh is a separate Sunnah. It is in fact Sunnah\nMu\u2019akkadah to complete an entire Qur\u2019an either by reciting it or listening to\nit. If a Hafidh is not available, then one may recite any portion of the Qur\u2019an\nhe knows, for example Surah Yaseen, Surah Mulk, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CONGREGATION: Where possible, a small group may perform the Taraweeh Salah and\ncomplete a Khatam in the Masjid, or at home provided it does not contravene any\nlaws. In the current situation, it will suffice for the men to read their\nTaraweeh at home. It is sufficient for a minimum of two people to form a\ncongregation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WOMEN\nAND CHILDREN: -It is necessary for the Imam to make the intention of leading the\nwomen. The males shall stand in the first row followed by the children in the\nsecond and the women in the third row. Older girls should stand with the women\nand not with the children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IMAMAT: – According to the preferred view of\nthe Hanafi Madhhab, a person who is not baaligh (reached puberty) cannot lead\nthe Taraweeh prayers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– It is not permissible for women to lead men in any Salah. It is\nalso Makruh Tahreemi to have a women only Jama\u2019ah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MISCELLANEOUS: – It is  not permissible to follow Taraweeh through a\nlive stream, radio or TV. Salah can be read wearing masks, gloves and a slight gap\nbetween the followers due to the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– If one is able to read Taraweeh in congregation, he should also\nread the Witr Salah in congregation. Excerpt from guidelines by Mufti\nEbrahim Desai (Hafidhahullah)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
