Question:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 I have 2 questions which I would appreciate\nyour guidance on, of course whenever you have time. 1. Some people say that the\nsoul remains around until 40 days after death. Please comment on this. 2. About\n6 to 8 hours before the deceased passed away, she was reaching her hand out and\nsaying mama sometimes and papa sometimes, \u201chelp me\u201d. Some family members are\nthinking that she was seeing her deceased parents. Could this be so , please\nshed some guidance on this. Jazakallah khair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Answer:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As-sal\u0101mu \u2018alaykum wa-rahmatull\u0101hi wa-barak\u0101tuh.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1- The belief that the soul remains around until 40 days after death is incorrect and\nbaseless, rather the soul is returned to the body after burial is completed, and\nthe questioning of the grave begins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The soul\nreturning to the body for questioning after burial is supported by many Ahadith;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uthman (Allah be pleased with him) narrates\nthat the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu alahi wa sallam), would stand by the\ngrave after buring the deceased and say: \u201cSeek forgiveness for your brother and\npray for his steadfastness, for he is now being questioned.\u201d (Sunan Abi Dawud,\nno: 3213)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2- There are various Quranic verses and Ahadith\nwhich discuss the affairs of Death and  barzakh<\/em>.\nThese texts are true and their purports will be manifested as Allah Ta\u2018\u0101l\u0101\nwills. The difficulties at the time of death, questioning of Munkar<\/em> and Nak\u012br<\/em>\nin the grave, the bliss or punishment which will be experienced in the grave as\nper one\u2019s faith and actions, etc. will occur. However, we are merely mukallaf<\/em>\n(responsible) of having \u012bm\u0101n ijm\u0101l\u012b<\/em> (faith without delving into details)\nupon their occurrences and are not mukallaf<\/em> of understanding the\nsubtleties of the r\u016bh<\/em> (soul) and barzakh<\/em> (transitory life between\nthis life and the hereafter), as these are not from the necessities of d\u012bn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is proven, is the pain\nand agonies of death are the last hardship that a person encounters before\nmeeting Allah, and they are the last thing by means of which Allah forgives the\nsins of His slave. These difficulties and pain is\nexperienced by every person at death, and has nothing to do with whether the\nperson was pious or an evildoer; rather if he was pious it will increase him in\nreward, otherwise it will expiate him for sins. When a pious soul sees the\nangels of mercy and glad tidings, this will help alleviate such difficulties. \u2018Umar\nibn \u2018Abd al-\u2018Azeez said: I would not like the agonies of death to be reduced\nfor me, for that is the last thing by means of which sin may be expiated for\nthe believer\u2019. We ask Allah to make these\nagonies easy for us and help us to bear them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u2018Aa\u2019ishah (Radhiallahu Anha) narrates that\nduring the sickness of which he died, the Messenger of Allah (\ufdfa<\/strong>) began to put his hand in water and wipe\nhis face with it, saying: \u201cLaa ilaaha ill-Allah (there is no god but Allah),\nverily death has agonies.\u201d Then he held up his hand and started saying: \u201cWith\nthe higher companions\u2026\u201d until he passed away and his hand fell. (Al-Bukhaari)  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is therefore possible,\nthat during the difficulties of death a person may remember their dear ones.\nThe calling of the deceased her parents may be due to the difficulties of death\nshe was experiencing, and not actually seeing her parents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
