Sunnahs of the Newborn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Question:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> I&#8217;m a sister, my friend ( who is a muslima ) is about to have a baby via C-section Insha&#8217;Allah, she requested me to be by her side to support her with what duas to say when the baby arrives. She will be under anasthesian Insha&#8217;Allah but will be aware of everything around her. This will be my first time to be in an operating room Insha&#8217;Allah and also assist in delivery. I would like to know what duas can I say before, during and after the surgery for both mother and child? What can I tell her to say to make things easy? I&#8217;ve heard that once the baby is here, we have to utter some words in the baby&#8217;s right ear, what can I say? What&#8217;s the sunnah&#8217;s way to welcome a baby? Please assist me with some advice regarding this. What dua can she say after surgery for her recovery? Can I bring Qur&#8217;an to read to her while she&#8217;s resting in the hospital?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Answer:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>As-sal\u0101mu \u2018alaykum wa-rahmatull\u0101hi wa-barak\u0101tuh.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Being blessed with a child is indeed a great bounty of Allah Ta\u2019ala. Therefore utmost gratitude and contentment should be showed to Allah Ta\u2019ala. While enjoying this great Ni\u2019mah (bounty) from Allah and ensuring that all the child\u2019s needs, physically and medically are fulfilled, the deeper and more essential dimension must not be forgotten; the teachings and requirements of Shari\u2019ah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The time before birth one should turn to Allah and make Dua for a safe delivery and normal child. The mother should engage herself in Zikr and Quran and seeking Allah\u2019s help and blessings. The reward for a woman who bears the pains of childbirth is great, hence one should ask Allah for their full share of reward and do it mindfully and for the sake of Allah.<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A common statement made by some sisters who are mothers is \u201cI don\u2019t get any time to do \u2018Ibaadah\u201d. This is a misconception, because we don\u2019t realize that even the every day tasks that we do as Muslims become acts of \u2018Ibaadah if they are accompanied with a good intention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A mother is chosen by Allah for the creating and up bringing of the future worshippers of Allah, the future Ulama or Mujaahideen or teachers or leaders: the future Ummah. Mothers of The Prophets (Alyhimus Asalaam) and the great scholars and pious also went through the difficulties of childbirth to bear such great personalities. Similarly the intention at the time of delivery should be to bear such children who would become such great Muslims and assets to the Muslim Ummah. This will be a great investment for the mother. The temporary pain is insignificant in relation to the long term benefits in this world and the hereafter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When a woman goes through the various difficulties of pregnancy and ultimately the pains of labour and delivery and has <em>Sabr<\/em> (patience) and <em>Ihtisaab<\/em> (hoping for the reward of Allah), it will all bring great reward that will be recorded in her good deeds. Allah Ta\u2019ala will reward the Muslim for everything that befalls him in this world. Even if a thorn pricks him, Allah will expiate thereby some of his sins and elevate his status<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a>, and the pains of labour and pregnancy are far greater than that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At the time of delivery Surah Yaseen should be read and also many Durood upon Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alahi Wa Sallam<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a>).The following Aayaat may be read for ease in delivery, by the mother and whoever is with her;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u062b\u064f\u0645\u0651\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0651\u064e\u0628\u0650\u064a\u0644\u064e \u064a\u064e\u0633\u0651\u064e\u0631\u064e\u0647\u064f<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Transliteration: Thumma assabeela yassarah (80:20)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u0623\u064e\u0648\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0645\u0652 \u064a\u064e\u0631\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0630\u0650\u064a\u0646\u064e \u0643\u064e\u0641\u064e\u0631\u064f\u0648\u0627 \u0623\u064e\u0646\u0651\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0651\u064e\u0645\u064e\u0627\u0648\u064e\u0627\u062a\u0650 \u0648\u064e\u0627\u0644\u0652\u0623\u064e\u0631\u0652\u0636\u064e \u0643\u064e\u0627\u0646\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0627 \u0631\u064e\u062a\u0652\u0642\u064b\u0627 \u0641\u064e\u0641\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0642\u0652\u0646\u064e\u0627\u0647\u064f\u0645\u064e\u0627 \u06d6 \u0648\u064e\u062c\u064e\u0639\u064e\u0644\u0652\u0646\u064e\u0627 \u0645\u0650\u0646\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0645\u064e\u0627\u0621\u0650 \u0643\u064f\u0644\u0651\u064e \u0634\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0621\u064d \u062d\u064e\u064a\u0651\u064d \u06d6 \u0623\u064e\u0641\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0627 \u064a\u064f\u0624\u0652\u0645\u0650\u0646\u064f\u0648\u0646\u064e<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Transliteration: Awa lam yara allatheena kafaroo anna assamawati wal-arda kanata ratqan fafataqnahuma waja\u2019Alnaa minaalma-i kulla shay-in hayyin afalaa yu\u2019minoon (21:30)<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After the child is born, the following Sunnats should be observed;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Adhan and iqamah<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When the child is born Adhan and iqamah should be said in the child&#8217;s ears.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the right ear of the new-born baby, the Adhan should be recited, and in the left ear, the Iqamah.<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\"><sup><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a> This is done immediately after the baby is bathed. However if there is a delay, it may be done before. On the birth of Hadhrat Hasan to .Hadhrat Faatimah <em>may Allah be pleased with them <\/em>the Holy Prophet (sallallahu Alahi Wa Sallam) had said the Adhan in his ear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Narrated &#8216;Ubaidullah bin Abi Rafi&#8217;:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That his father said: &#8220;I saw the Messenger of Allah (\ufdfa) say the Adhan in the ear of Al-Hasan bin &#8216;Ali &#8211; when he was born to Fatimah &#8211; the Adhan of Salat.&#8221; (at-Tirmidhi 1514<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\"><sup><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Tahneek<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tahneek is the Sunnah of chewing date and applying a part of the chewed portion to the palate of the child so that it goes down the child\u2019s mouth easily. If date is unavailable, one may apply any thing sweet, like honey to the child\u2019s palate. The dental palate, the jaws and the mouth are made active. As a result, it is easy for the child to suck milk from the breast of its mother.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is preferable for the Thaneek to be done by an \u00c1alim or a pious<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> elder of the family. If not then by any Muslim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Aisha (Radhiallahu Anhu) narrates that &#8220;the people used to bring their newborn children to the Prophet and he would bless them and perform the tahneek&#8221; (Sahih Muslim 2147)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Naming of the child.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Naming a child with a beautiful and honorable name is very important. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alahi Wa Sallam) always chose names with good and beautiful meanings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It should be selected from the names of Ambiyaa like Yaqoob, Yusuf, Idris, Musa, Saleh, Muhammad, Ahmad etc. or should be adopted from the names of Sahabah and pious People like Umar, Ali, Usman, Khalid, Khadhija, Maryam, Sumayya etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some Ahadeeth indicate that the child is to be named on the seventh day along with Aqeeqah. However, the Prophet also named children on the day of their birth, as proven by other narrations. There is no harm if the child is named before the seventh day, but if the naming has not been done, and then the child should be named on the seventh day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>To make Aqeeqa on the 7th day<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Aqeeqa is a form of Sadaqah whereby the child is safeguarded against<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> misfortunes. The practice of Aqeeqah is encouraged in Islam. This is understood from following Ahadith<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rasulullah )Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam( carried out the Aqeeqah of Hasan (Radhiyallahu Anhu) and Husain (Radhiyallahu Anhu) by slaughtering one ram each.(Abu Dawood 2834)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Buraidah )Radhiyallahu Anhu( mentions, \u201cprior to Islam when one of us had a newborn boy, he would slaughter one sheep and smear the head of the newborn with its blood. When Allah blessed us with Islam, we began slaughtering one sheep. Thereafter, we would shave the child\u2019s hair and apply saffron\u201d. .(Abu Dawood 2836)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Two sheep, or two goats are slaughtered in the case of a male while one goat or one sheep in the case of a female. If for some reason Aqeeqa was not made on the 7th day, then it should be done on the14th, 21st 28th or any day in multiples of 7 thereafter. For those who cannot afford two animals for the baby son, even one animal will be sufficient as <em>Aqeeqah<\/em>. If one has no means to sacrifice even this much, then there is no harm and he would not have to make up for it later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Shaving the head<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> The hair on the head of the new-born, boy or girl, should be shaved on the seventh day. It is mustahib (desirable) to give silver in sadaqah to the poor and needy equal to the weight of his or her hair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Narrated Muhammad bin &#8216;Ali bin Al-Husain: That Ali bin Abi Talib said: &#8220;The Messenger of Allah (\ufdfa) had the &#8216;Aqiqah for Al-Hasan with one sheep, and said: &#8216;O Fatimah! Shave his head and give the weight of his hair in silver as charity.'&#8221; He said: &#8220;So I weighed it, and it was the weight of a Dirham or a bit of a Dirham.&#8221; (at-Tirmidhi 1519)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Circumcision<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Circumcision of the boy should be done before he attains maturity. It is advisable to do it with aqeeqah. At this age he does not suffer much pain.
