People say that, at the beginning of the New Year the companions of the Prophet \ufdfa used to recite a particular dua. Please verify<\/em>!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Answer:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u0628\u0633\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0631\u062d\u064a\u0645<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At the time of the Prophet \ufdfa the Hijri calendar was not adopted, nor was it used at the Khilafa of Abu Bakr (r.a.). There was no such thing as New Islamic Year, as a year would be regarded as the passing of twelve months e.g. from Ramadhan to Ramadhan, from Shaban to Shaban etc. \u00a0The year would be named by the event which occurred therein for example, the year of the elephant, the year of the migration from Makkah to Madinah (al-Hijrah), the year of the Battle of Badr, the year of Conquest of Makkah, the year of the death of the Prophet \ufdfa etc. Thus it is clear that at the time of the Prophet \ufdfa the first of Muharam was not regarded as the start of the New Year nor the last of Dhul Hijjah as being Old Year\u2019s Day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Hijri Calendar was introduced in the Khilafah of Umar (r.a.) in an attempt to alleviate the conflicts associated with the calculating and dating of events. It is reported that during the Kilafah of Umar (r.a), Abu Musa al-Ash`ari (r.a) wrote to Umar complaining that: <em>commissions come to us from the Leader of the Muslims (Umar) and we are unsure as to which of the commissions we should act upon, also there are cheques (Sukuk) dated for Sha\u2019baan and we don\u2019t know exactly which Sha\u2019baan is meant, is it the present Sha\u2019baan or the upcoming Sha\u2019baan<\/em>. Upon this, Umar (r.a) gathered the companions of the Prophet \ufdfa and discussed the matter which resulted in the establishment of a Standard Islamic Calendar. The Calendar was dated from the year the Prophet \ufdfa migrated from Makkah to Madina, hence the name \u201cThe Hijri Calendar\u201d and Muharam was chosen as the first month in the Calendar. Thereafter, it was widely accepted and adopted by the Muslim world as the standard dating system. <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Based on the aforementioned, the first of Muharam being the first day of the Islamic Year was only introduced at the reign of Umar (r.a.).Therefore it would be absolutely incorrect to say that the Prophet \ufdfa used to recite a specific dua upon the commencement of a new year. (O moon!) Your Rubb and mine is Allah. May this moon be bringing guidance and good).<\/em>And such was the practice of the noble companions of the Prophet \ufdfa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Imam At-Tabarani (r.a) has recorded in his Al-Mu&#8217;jam Al-Awsat the following Hadith on the authority of Abdullah bin Hishaam (r.a)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u0643\u0627\u0646 \u0623\u0635\u062d\u0627\u0628 \u0627\u0644\u0646\u0628\u064a \u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645\u00a0 \u064a\u062a\u0639\u0644\u0645\u0648\u0646 \u0647\u0630\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u062f\u0639\u0627\u0621 \u0625\u0630\u0627 \u062f\u062e\u0644\u062a \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0646\u0629 <u>\u0623\u0648<\/u> \u0627\u0644\u0634\u0647\u0631 : \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647\u0645 \u0623\u062f\u062e\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0646\u0627 \u0628\u0627\u0644\u0623\u0645\u0646\u00a0 \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0625\u064a\u0645\u0627\u0646\u00a0 \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645\u0629 \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0625\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645\u00a0 \u0648\u0631\u0636\u0648\u0627\u0646 \u0645\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0646 \u060c \u0648\u062c\u0648\u0627\u0632 \u0645\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0634\u064a\u0637\u0627\u0646<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The companions of the Prophet \ufdfa used to recite this dua when a New Year or month would commence: <em>O Allah enter it (the New Year or month) upon us with Imaan and security, safety and Islam and pleasure from Ar-Rahmaan and refuge from the Shaytaan<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This Hadith however does not indicate towards a specific dua at the approach of a New Islamic Year because of the following reasons;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(1) The wordings of the Hadith are similar to those Ahaadith which mention the dua upon sighting the new moon\/Hilaal (new month). None of which makes mention of a dua upon sighting the crescent of Muharam or the commencement of the New Year. Moreover, the word <em>Sanah<\/em> (year) was not mentioned, rather the word <em>Hilaal<\/em> (crescent) was mentioned. Furthermore, these Ahaadith are sounder than the Hadith recorded by Imam at-Tabarani. Thus, the established Sunnah of the Prophet \ufdfa is to recite the dua upon sighting the crescent of each new month including the commencement of \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0month of Muharram.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(2)In wording of the Hadith recorded by At-Tabarani, the Dhameer (pronoun) in the word \u0623\u062f\u062e\u0644\u0647 \u00a0\u00a0comes in the masculine form which most likely refers to either <em>Hilaal<\/em> (cresent) or <em>Shahr<\/em> (month) and not Sanah (year). Therefore, it is possible that the word&#8221;\u0623\u0648&#8221; mentioned in &#8221; \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0646\u0629 \u0623\u0648 \u0627\u0644\u0634\u0647\u0631&#8221; denotes <em>Shak<\/em> (doubt). This being the case, there are numerous Ahaadith in which this dua (upon sighting the crescent) is mentioned without\u0623\u0648&#8221; \u00a0&#8221; (doubt) i.e it clearly states Hilaal (indicating to month). If however, the word &#8220;\u0623\u0648&#8221; \u00a0in the Hadith does not denote Shak (doubt) but rather carries the meaning of &#8221; \u0648&#8221; which denotes <em>Ataf<\/em>\u00a0 (join\/assimilate) the matter would still remain the same i.e. the dua is recited at the approach of each new month and subsequently, at the beginning of the New Islamic Year as Muharam is the first month in the Islamic Calendar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(3) Ibn As-Sunni (r.a) -\u0647\u0640364, in his <em>Amal al-Yawm Wal-Laylah<\/em>, records a similar narration to the one in question without mentioning the word <em>Sanah<\/em> (year). Rather the words are; <em>when the Prophet <\/em><em>\ufdfa<\/em><em> used to see the crescent he would say<\/em> <em>O Allah enter it (the new month) upon us with Imaan and security, safety and Islam\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026..<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u0623\u0646 \u0631\u0633\u0648\u0644 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645 \u0643\u0627\u0646 \u0625\u0630\u0627 \u0631\u0623\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0647\u0644\u0627\u0644 \u0642\u0627\u0644: \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647\u0645 \u0623\u062f\u062e\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0646\u0627 \u0628\u0627\u0644\u0623\u0645\u0646 \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0625\u064a\u0645\u0627\u0646\u060c \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645\u0629\u060c \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0625\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645\u060c \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0633\u0643\u064a\u0646\u0629 \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0639\u0627\u0641\u064a\u0629\u060c \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0631\u0632\u0642 \u0627\u0644\u062d\u0633\u0646 \u0647\u0640<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(4) Al-Asbahani (Qawwam as-Sunnah) records in his Al-Targheeb wal-Tarheeb the following Hadith on the authority of Abdullah bin As-Saa`ib (r.a):<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u0643\u0627\u0646 \u0623\u0635\u062d\u0627\u0628 \u0631\u0633\u0648\u0644 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0635\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0648\u0633\u0644\u0645 \u064a\u062a\u0639\u0644\u0645\u0648\u0646 \u0647\u0630\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u062f\u0639\u0627\u0621 \u0643\u0645\u0627 \u064a\u062a\u0639\u0644\u0645\u0648\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0642\u0631\u0622\u0646 \u0625\u0630\u0627 \u062f\u062e\u0644 \u0627\u0644\u0634\u0647\u0631 \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0633\u0646\u0629: \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647\u0645 \u0623\u062f\u062e\u0644\u0647 \u0628\u0627\u0644\u0623\u0645\u0646 \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0625\u064a\u0645\u0627\u0646 \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645\u0629 \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0625\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645 \u0648\u062c\u0648\u0627\u0631\u064d \u0645\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0634\u064a\u0637\u0627\u0646 \u0648\u0631\u0636\u0648\u0627\u0646 \u0645\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0631\u062d\u0645\u0646<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The companions of the Messenger of Allah \ufdfa used to learn this dua just like they would learn the verses of the Quran whenever a new month or a new year enters: <em>O Allah enter it (the new month and year) upon us with Imaan and security\u2026\u2026..<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This narration however, does not indicate towards a specific dua to be recited on the commencement of a new year rather the dua mentioned therein is general i.e. for each and every month not only the month of Murharam which commences the new year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(5) In Islam, the commencement of a new month is established through the sighting of the crescent or the completion of thirty days. The narration recorded by both At-Tabarani and Al-Asbahani outwardly indicates towards a dua at the beginning of the month and subsequently the New Year (and not specific to the New Year). There are two implications in this narration;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(a) <u>First Implication<\/u>: The new month refers to the new moon (crescent) and this meaning is very clear from the narration recorded by Ibn As-Sunni:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u0643\u0627\u0646 \u0625\u0630\u0627 \u0631\u0623\u0649 <u>\u0627\u0644\u0647\u0644\u0627\u0644<\/u> \u0642\u0627\u0644: \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647\u0645 <u>\u0623\u062f\u062e\u0644\u0647<\/u>&#8230;&#8230;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>when the Prophet <\/em><em>\ufdfa<\/em><em> used to see the crescent he would say<\/em> <em>O Allah enter it (the new\/crescent month)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Therefore, there is also a great possibility that this narration was transmitted figuratively in its meaning. The above narration (recorded by At-Tabarani and Al-Asbahani) and the established dua of the Prophet \ufdfa upon sighting the crescent are similar in wording except the first word. The former begins with: \u00a0\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647\u0645 \u0623\u062f\u062e\u0644\u0652\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0646\u0627 (O Allah! enter it upon us) and the latter with:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647\u0645 \u0623\u0647\u0644\u0651\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0646\u0627 \u00a0(O Allah! cause it to rise upon us). Both words contain the same meaning. Ali al-Qaari in his commentary of Mishkaat al \u2013Masabeeh, explains the word\u0623\u0647\u0644\u0651\u0647 :<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u0623\u064a \u0623\u0637\u0644\u0639\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0646\u0627 \u00a0<em>(i.e send forth it, reveal it, show it unto us). <\/em>This clearly shows that the meaning in both narrations is the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Therefore, it will be correct to conclude that the narration mentioned by At-Tabarani and Al-Asbahani is actually the dua for the sighting of the crescent transmitted figuratively in meaning. If such is the case then the more authentic dua for the sighting of the crescent will be the wording mentioned in the narrations transmitted using the literal wording (i.e. \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647\u0645 \u0623\u0647\u0644\u0651\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0646\u0627).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(b) <u>Second Implication<\/u>: There is a specific dua for the sighting of the crescent (which begins with \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647\u0645 \u0623\u0647\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0646\u0627) and a specific one for the beginning of the month (\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647\u0645 \u0623\u062f\u062e\u0644\u0647 \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0646\u0627), either upon seeing the crescent or after completing thirty days. Except that such a view is unheard of from the Scholars of the past and is thus unacceptable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(6) It is an established fact that the Scholars of Islam, for the past centuries did not make mention of any specific dua to be recited upon the approach of the New Islamic Year or the month of Muharam in spite of the narration recorded by At-Tabarani (\u0647\u0640360) and Al-Asbahani (\u0647\u0640535). Perhaps they did not regard the narration or understood it be pertaining to the new crescent or month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In conclusion, there is no specific dua attributed the Prophet \ufdfa nor his noble companions upon the commencement of the New Islamic Year. Whatever dua found in the books of Ahaadith are general to all months, including Muharam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And Allah Ta\u2019\u0101la
