Respected Mufti Sahib. Sunset is @ 6.29 pm on Mon 13.06.2016 in Trinidad but the Ramadhan Time Table has Iftar Time @ 6.32 pm. If a person breaks his fast at 6.29 pm, is his Fast valid. In some Masjid they advise on the exact Sunset time to break fast. Thanking you for your clarification on this issue.<\/span><\/p>\n

You are required to break your fast after the sun has set i.e. when the entire Qurs<\/em> (disc) of the sun disappears below the horizon.[1]<\/a> The redness that remains on the horizon after the sun has set is if no significance.<\/span><\/p>\n

If the fast is broken a little moment before the sun has actually set then the entire fast is nullified and Qadha would be Wajib. Therefore, it is imperative that you observe precaution when breaking fast. For this reason the Ramadhan Time-Table, published by the Jaamia Madinatul Uloom, Daarul Uloom Trinidad & Tobago and other reliable institutions, is inclusive of three to five minutes precautionary time at the time of Suhoor and Iftaar. We hereby advise you to exercise precaution by adhering to precautionary time given in these timetables.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Islamic Jurists have stated that it is obligatory to undertake precaution when breaking fast. Furthermore an intelligent person would not risk his entire fast because of a \u201cfew minutes\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Acting upon our advice does not in any way contradict that Hadith of the Holy Prophet \ufdfa which instructs us to hasten in breaking the fast nor is in contrary to the Hadith which instructs us to hasten the Magrib Salah.[2]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, these perpetual solar timetables do not reflect the exact solar time for each and every area of a country. The timings printed are normally based on the timings of one particular location.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the solar timings calculated by the Muslim World League (which is widely accepted), there exist at least three minutes variance in sunset in different places of Trinidad and Tobago.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example on the date in question Monday 13th<\/sup> June 20, 2016 sunset at the following places in Trinidad are as follows:[3]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Port-of-Spain\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 6:28<\/span><\/p>\n

San Fernando\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 6:27<\/span><\/p>\n

Scarborough\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 6:26<\/span><\/p>\n

This shows clearly that areas, even though closely located, can have variances in their actual solar timings. Consequently, these slight variations would have a direct impact on those religious obligations that are connected to the movement of the sun e.g. Salah, Fast, I\u2019tikaaf etc.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Jurists have stated that a person is obligated to rely upon the sunset time of his own location.[4]<\/a> Therefore for a person residing in Port-of Spain cannot follow the sunset time of those living in San Fernando as the sun sets at the latter at an earlier time. If a person residing in Port-of Spain decides to follow the sunset timings of San Fernando when breaking his fast then his fast would be nullified.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Allaamah Ibn Abideen mentions in his Radd al-Muhtar: If a person is situated on a high place such as the Minaret of Alexandria (The Lighthouse of Alexandria approx. 450 feet tall) he is not allowed to break his fast until the sun has set from the point where he is looking (i.e. upon the lighthouse). However, the people of the city may break their fast before him (i.e. the person on the lighthouse), if the sun has set for them. Similarly is the ruling with regards to dawn in the case of Fajr Salah and Suhoor (pre-dawn meal)<\/em>.[5]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Regarding your query, if a person broke his fast on that particular day at 6:29 pm his fast is valid.<\/span><\/p>\n

In conclusion, we advise you to exercise precaution on this matter by adhering to the timetables printed by the Jaamia Madinatul Uloom and other reliable Islamic Institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n
