Question:<\/span><\/p>\n

Is it permissible to recite Surah Alaq in Salah and leave out the last ayah? If not is it necessary to perform Sajdah Tilaawah in the Salah?<\/span><\/p>\n

Answer:<\/span><\/p>\n

It is reprehensible for one to recite a Surah containing an ayah of Sajdah and upon reaching the ayah the reciter finishes his recitation without reciting the Ayah of Sajdah. This is irrespective of whether he recites in Salah or out of Salah.[1]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

If surah al-Alaq is recited in Salah, then Sajdah becomes Wajib in Salah i.e. it must be performed within the Salah and cannot be performed afterwards. If not performed within the Salah without a valid reason then the person would be sinful.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Ayah of Sajdah in Surah al-Alaq occurs in the last verse, therefore if the person is a Munfarid<\/strong> (praying by himself) and recites Surah al-Alaq he may adopt one of the following three methods;[2]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

(A) After completing the Surah, one may go immediately into Sajdah (Sajda at-Tilawah) thereafter, upon raising one should recite another surah or a few verses before going into Ruku\u2019[3]<\/a> and this is the most preferred method.<\/span><\/p>\n

NB<\/strong>: After returning to the standing position from Sajdah at-Tilaawah, then recitation before going into Ruku\u2019 is not obligatory as it is permissible to go into Ruku\u2019 without any further recitation[4]<\/a>, except that such action is disliked by some of the Fuqaha.<\/span><\/p>\n

(B) One may perform the Salah as normal i.e. without making a separate Sajda at-Tilawah (recitation), as the Sajdah of Salah will suffice for his Sajda at-Tilawah, even though one may not intend Sajdah at-Tilwah while performing Sajdah[5]<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

(C) After completing the Surah, one may perform Ruku\u2019 as he would normally do after the competition of a surah, except that he makes intention for Sajda at-Tilawah while in Ruku\u2019 (before raising his head from Ruku\u2019)[6]<\/a> and this would suffice for Sajda at-Tilawah.<\/span><\/p>\n

If the person is the Imam<\/strong> then he should only adopt the first or second method. The reason being is, in the third method the intention of the Imam in Ruku` would not suffice for the followers.[7]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

If however, the Salah is of a silent nature as in Dhuhr and Asr, then the third method can also be adopted by the Imam since the Fuqaha have stated that, the intention of the Imam will suffice for the followers in the silent Salah.[8]<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

NB<\/strong>: If the Imam intends to recite an Ayah of Sajdah, it is advisable that he announces to the congregation before commencing of the Salah.<\/span><\/p>\n

NB<\/strong>: It is not<\/strong> advisable that the imam recites an Ayah of Sajdah in a silent Salah and thereafter performs Sajdah at-Tilawah. The reason being is that, many may not be aware that the Imam is performing Sajdah at-Tilawah, they may assume that the Imam has left out Ruku and went ahead into Sajdah, consequently, they may not follow him and as a result they would leave out a Wajib act in Salaah.<\/span><\/p>\n
