Wetting the leather socks instead of Masah.

fatwa-tt October 26, 2016

A person wearing leather socks does not make masah at the time of wudhu, instead he wets his socks, would his wudhu be complete?

Answer

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

When making Masah (wiping) upon leather socks it is obligatory that the surface area from the toes until the middle bone of the foot (cuneiform bones), to the extent of the length of three fingers be wiped. To wipe the area beyond the cuneiform bones is not a condition for the validity of Masah however, it is an act of merit.[1]

The Fardh (compulsory) aspect of wiping would also be fulfilled if the surface area from the toes to the cuneiform bones is wetted or washed to the extent of the length of three fingers of the hand.[2] However such an individual would be deprived of the rewards of Masah (wiping) as the practice of the Prophet ﷺ was wiping of the leather socks.

عن جَرِير بن عبد الله البَجَلِيّ رضي الله عنه قال: رأيتُ رسولَ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بالَ ثم توضأَ ومسحَ على خُفَّيْهِ متفق عليه

Jareer bin ‘Abdullah (May Allah be pleased with him) said that he saw that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ answered the call of nature thereafter performed Wudhu and wiped his leather socks.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
