Using real and synthetic hair extensions or eyelashes.

fatwa-tt May 23, 2018

Question:

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah, dear Mufti
What is the hukum of applying individual eyelashes from both real human hair and synthetic hair that usually lasts for up to six months-not cosmetics lashes that are stuck with glue and easily peeled off- , and the hukum of hair extensions of real or synthetic hair?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has clearly forbidden the wearing of hair of another human, or joining human hair to one’s hair, as it involves deception and using a part of the human body, both of which are Haraam.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (Radhiallahu Anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Allah has cursed the woman who joins (her or someone else’s) hair (with the hair of another man or a woman) and the woman who asks for her hair to be joined (with the hair of another person) and the one who tattoos and the one asks to get tattooed.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 5589)

Therefore it is impermissible to use humans hair (‘real hair’) in any part of the body, whether the hair is completely joined and fitted into ones hair or whether it is in the form of a wig which can be removed. Similarly it will not be permitted to use pig’s hair due to it being impure (najis).

Using synthetic hair or hair of an animal (except pig) will be permissible regardless of whether the hair is fitted into one’s hair or it is a removable wig. The same rulings will apply for hair and eyelashes.

It is stated in al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya:

“To join one’s hair with the hair of another human is unlawful (haram), whether it is one’s own (removed) hair or someone else’s hair, as mentioned in al-Ikhtiyar sharh al-Mukhtar. However, there is nothing wrong for a woman to put the fur (hair) of a camel or a goat (or other animals except a pig) in her hair strands, as mentioned in Qadi Khan.” (al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya, 5/358).
