Can I do Qurbani of 1 goat or sheep on behalf of all the Prophets alaihimus salaam, or 1 sheep/goat on behalf of all my Asatizah or on behalf of both my deceased parents? Or would i have to do 1 sheep/goat per Prophet (AS) or per Teacher or per parent?
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
If one has been favoured by Allah with wealth, then he may perform an additional Qurbaani other than his Waajib (compulsory) Qurbaani, on behalf of Rasoolullah (ﷺ) as well. One may also include the Prophets (Alayhimus Salaam), the Sahabah (Radhiyallaahu Anhum), and all those living or deceased relatives, friends and teachers who have conveyed Deeni knowledge or been a cause of benefit to one, with the intention of sending the reward to them. Multiple people may be included in that same animal of Qurbaani for the intention of sending the reward.
The Prophet (ﷺ) himself performed Udhiya/Qurbani on behalf of his Ummah and family members – both the living and deceased. This is mentioned in various Ahadith,
Nabi (ﷺ) laid down the ram, and slaughtered it saying, “In the name of Allah! O Allah, accept from Muhammad, the family of Muhammad and the Ummah of Muhammad.” (Sahih Muslim 1967)
Hanash (Radhiallahu Anha) relates that, “I saw Ali (Radhiallahu Anhu) sacrificing two rams.” I asked him, “What is this?” He replied, “Verily the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) advised me to sacrifice on his behalf (after his demise), hence I am sacrificing on his behalf.” (Sunan Abu Dawud 2783, Sunan Tirmidhi 1495 and Musnad Ahmad)
