Item received after refunded, what should I do?

fatwa-tt February 6, 2017

Question:

السلام علیکم

Honourable Mufti Saheb,

One of my friends ordered an item from alibaba online shopping they offer a chance to cancel the transaction after 30 days if the item was not received.

After my friend cancelled a transaction after 30 days of the order but the item still came through

What should my friend do?  Does he pay for the item try to return it or just keep it?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In such a case the purchaser should contact the seller from whom the item was purchased online, and notify them that the item was received after being refund. Normally the seller can easily be contacted.

The seller may ask for the item’s price or a reduced price, or let the customer keep the item. If the seller would like the item returned, the purchaser can ask the seller to facilitate the return shipping of the item.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best

Mufti Arshad Ali
