Is the job as a Web developer permissible?

fatwa-tt December 5, 2017

Question:

Assalamu alaikum,

I am intending to work as a Web Developer for a company called “Jet2.com”. The company  runs two websites through which people can book flights on their planes and holidays.

The job will involve coding as well as adding images of humans on their website although it does seem to be minimal.
Is it OK to accept such a job? Jazakallahu khair.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The ruling of digital pictures and videos is a highly contested issue amongst prominent ‘Ulama. Many contend that digital pictures and videos are not the same as regular photo graphical pictures hence impermissible, while others are of the opinion that they are in the same ruling as regular pictures. However, if your job entails adding images of women on the website, then it would be totally prohibited.

You may pursue the job, but request your employer to excuse you from adding images of humans and animate objects to the website.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
