Cosmetics Which contain Minerals from the Dead Sea?

fatwa-tt April 24, 2016

Question:

Is it permissible to use cosmetics that contain minerals from the dead sea?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The Dead Sea is the place where the wrath and punishment of Allah descended upon the nation of Prophet Loot (Alayhis-Salaam).

It is narrated that The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

Do not enter (the places) of these people where Allah’s punishment had fallen unless you do so weeping. If you do not weep, do not enter (the places of these people) because Allah’s curse and punishment which fell upon them may fall upon you.( Bukhārī, 433)

It is also narrated in a Hadith,

The people landed at the land of Thamūd called Al-Hijr along with Allah’s Messenger ﷺ and they took water from its well for drinking and kneading the dough with it as well. (When Allah’s Messenger ﷺ heard about it) he ordered them to pour out the water they had taken from its wells and feed the camels with the dough, and ordered them to take water from the well whence the she-camel (of Prophet Salih) used to drink.( Bukhārī, 3379).

From these Ahādīth it is understood that Muslims are discouraged from visiting or benefitting from the places of those whom were punished by Allah Ta’ala, such as the people of Thamūd and the nation of Lūt (`alayhis salām).

Ulamaa (scholars) have stated that unless there is a valid necessity, one should not utilize items containing minerals or objects from the Dead Sea[1]. As Muslims, we should distance ourselves from anything that may displease Allah Ta’ala and strive to gain closer to Him by abstaining from anything even doubtful.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
