Conditions that make Qurbani wajib upon a person differs from Zakaah

Question

I learnt that the conditions that make Qurbani wajib upon person are the same conditions that make Zakah obligatory. Is my understanding correct?

Answer

بسم الله الرحـمن الرحيم

In principle, not all the assets owed by an individual are subjected to Zakah. Assets are of two types;

  • Zakatable Assets                 (ii) Non-Zakatable Assets

Zakatable Assets refers to all productive and potentially productive wealth (mal nami). It includes money (in whatever form or currency) gold/silver (in whatever form) and commodities bought with the intend of resale (whether on a personal or business level).

Non-Zakatable assets refers to all other forms of wealth that are neither productive or potentially productive. It includes all non-cash, non-gold/silver items that are not intended for trade.

Furthermore, with regards to Zakah, there are 3 distinct categories of people.

  1. Those who are liable to pay Zakah
  2. Those entitled to receive Zakah
  3. Those not liable to pay Zakah but at the same time cannot receive Zakah

As for the first category, Zakah becomes obligatory upon a person whose Zakatable Assets, after deducting liabilities, amount to or exceed the value of the Nisaab at the end of his Zakah anniversary.

As for the second category, a person is entitled to receive Zakah if the value of his Assets (both Zakatable and non-Zakatable), with the exception of those assets connected to his needs, is less than the value of the Nisaab at the time of receiving.

As for the third category, it relates to a person whose Assets, after deducting liabilities, is less than the value of the Nisaab. However, if his non-Zakatable assets (with the exception of those connected to his needs), were to be added, its total value would be equal to or exceed the value of the Nisaab.

For further information regarding Zakatable and non-Zakatable assets please refer to our Zakah Form and Calculation.[1]

Regarding Qurbani, it will be obligatory upon individuals of the first category and the third category, provided that the wealth comes in their possession anytime during the three days of slaughtering (10th, 11th and 12th Dhul Hijjah). Therefore, a person who may not be liable to pay Zakah maybe obliged to offer Qurbani as stated above.
