Are chickens dipped in hot water to remove the feathers impure?

fatwa-tt October 2, 2014

Question:

A person who slaughters chickens dips the chicken in water (60
degrees) with the entrails still in the chicken, to enable easy removal of
the feathers. Will this make the chicken meat napaak or not?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

If chickens are slaughtered and dipped in hot water with the entrails in order to de-feather the chickens, the meat will be pure if the water is not that hot which causes the entrails of the chicken to penetrate into the meat.

According to our observation, 60°C is not boiling hot water that causes the entrails to penetrate into the meat. As long as the water does not reach a boiling temperature , such chickens are can still be consumed. The meat of such chickens will be pure. [1]
