Making second salaam before the Imaam.

fatwa-tt March 11, 2016

Question:

If a person makes the second salaam before the Imaam, will the Salaah be complete or will the Salaah have to be repeated?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

If the Muqtadi (follower) said the second Salaam before the Imaam, the Salaah will be valid and there will be no need to repeat it. This will be the case also (but Makrooh Tahrimi) if the Muqtadi made the first Salaam before the Imaam, after completing Tashahhud[1].

However, it must be noted that it is not permissible for the Muqtadi (follower) to precede the Imaam in any actions of Salaah.

The Holy Prophetﷺ said: “The Imam is appointed so that he should be followed, so bow down after he bows down, and rise up after he rises up”(Muslim)
