Joking about matters of Deen

Question:

My father narrated a joke said by another with the intention of amusing others. My father stated as follows: “Sulaiman said that Allah must have given Malikul Maut a list of kumkotar village because in the last year or so all the following have died.” My father then proceeded to name those that had died. The other person laughed. Would this be kufr?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The mentioned statement will not constitute Kufr. However, Istighfaar (repentance) should be made and in future such statements should be refrained from, even in joking.
